See more Karan K @RT49546680 4d a long historical drama that earns most of its 160-minute runtime by refusing to rush history.Abkarian is fantastic as de Gaulle, Beale is very good as Churchill, and the rest of the cast remain at a high level. The French dialogue gives the political scenes an elegance and weight I really enjoyed, while the war sequences feel realistic without turning the movie into an action spectacle. cinematography is strong, especially in Africa, and the soundtrack made a very good first impression. I also think history buffs will enjoy it even more because knowing the real personalities, geography and political context makes the many names and events easier to appreciate. One diplomatic change of heart feels far too easy and clichéd, and despite the generally excellent pacing, there were stretches where my attention drifted. Most importantly, I was highly entertained but never emotionally moved. That keeps it at a strong 7 rather than an 8. I loved the witty exchanges between Churchill and De Gaulle, which bring some welcome humour to such a dramatic story. But what I appreciated most was seeing the Second World War from a European perspective rather than through the usual American lens. It feels fresh, ambitious and truly epic. This fleshed out the little I knew of De Gaulle really well, and seems a very interesting and plausible portrayal of his character and actions in the first half of the war. Looking forward to part 2 See more Martin W @RT27255404 Aug 28 De Gaulle has long been one of my heroes, so I was naturally keen to see this film. It didn't disappoint. Truly epic, with the space to tell both the incredible story of De Gaulle's resistance in exile and capture the dynamics of his personality and relationships, I heartily recommend this film, even to those with only passing interest in the subject matter. The telling of the story of De Gaulle's complex relatoinship with Churchill, and of the bravery of the battle of Bir Hakeim, are two particular standouts, as are the performances of Simon Abkarian as De Gaulle and Simon Russell Beale as Churchill.
