Movie Info

Luke is a married, but lonely filmmaker. His ambitions have created instability in his family and deepened the wedge between he and his wife. Just before departing for the last screenwriting competition of the year, his wife extends an ultimatum: if he returns unsuccessful, he must take a "real" job or lose his family. He boards the plane knowing he has one last shot at making his dreams a reality. Jo's been living on her own for as long as she remembers. She's struggling to make ends meet, determined to find her voice as an artist, and doing everything she can to keep what's left of her family together. When her absentee father unexpectedly returns, it jeopardizes her newfound stability and thrusts her back into the self-destructive cycle she thought she left behind. All of this is thrown on its head, when Luke and Jo meet. Despite their resistance, they discover in one another a shared set of longings, desires, and ambitions. This creates a sudden, but dangerous connection that jeopardizes everything they each claim to value: Luke's marriage and Jo's independence.

  • For an often familiar story, Luke and Jo stands out by virtue of its restraint.

  • Luke & Jo beautifully conveys the heartbreaking nature of our own crippling insecurities as the desire within us all to do better, to be better. If not for others, than for ourselves.

  • Digs in with surprising revelations and beautifully rendered bouts with faith. This faith could be with something/someone "higher" or it could be with ourselves. If it works, fine. But don't forget your feet on the ground and the support next door.

  • Overbay is clearly interested in asking deep questions in the midst of ordinary circumstances, and he also clearly loves his characters enough to treat them with a dignity and depth that go beyond cliches.
