What to Know

Critics Consensus

Continuing writer-director Jesse Armstrong's sterling streak of skewering the rich and powerful, Mountainhead counterbalances its repellant characters with terrific acting and dialogue.

There’s an immediacy to Armstrong’s satire that’s almost impulsive. But the anger that spurred Mountainhead’s creation is also its best quality. Armstrong is pissed off and has decided to channel that into brutal jokes. Go to Full Review

Mountainhead is a caustic, defiant and righteously furious diatribe against the maniacal egos of those with all of the money and all of the power, but no vanishingly little moral fibre – and all wrapped up by the best jokes in the business. Go to Full Review

Mountainhead, like its quartet of central characters, is extremely unpredictable and very, very rich. Go to Full Review

Obviously, the lead characters' loathsomeness is the point; I just didn’t find it to be such a compelling or interesting point that it needed to be made and re-made for nearly two hours. Go to Full Review

At its best, it delivers robust dissections of big ego masquerading as big humanity, of the philosophy-washing (“creative destruction”) of big-bucks greed and immorality. Go to Full Review

This film is another stone-cold tour de force from Jesse Armstrong, who spent four seasons of “Succession” on the privileged lives of some truly unlikable people. It’s hilarious and harrowing and not entirely pleasant. Go to Full Review

Chris S @Janomi Jul 5 Mountainhead has a cast and premise that should have worked much better for me than it did. Jesse Armstrong's dialogue is sharp, darkly funny, and often uncomfortably timely, using four tech billionaires to satirize wealth, ego, AI, deepfakes, social media manipulation, and unchecked influence. I liked several individual scenes and conversations, but I absolutely hated where the plot ultimately went. Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef are excellent as morally detached tech elites trapped inside a luxurious mountain estate while the world outside spirals. Their chemistry, insecurity, and power struggles make the chamber-piece setup consistently watchable. The problem is that the story becomes increasingly exaggerated and implausible. The satire has real bite, but the final act shifts too far into absurd farce for the emotional or dramatic payoff to land. The performances and dialogue are strong, but the plot kept me at a distance. See more Chris S. @BeerClub Jul 4 Liked the cast, hated the plot. See more Peg K @Pegels Jul 2 Absolutely horrible. Boring. Sony waste your time. See more Amybeth H @Amybeth207 Jun 18 I get what the intent was. But it failed, sadly. Gorgeous cinematography though. But ultimately just a stupid plot that got more inane as the movie progressed. We turned it off with 15 minutes to go, just googled how it ended, and didn't care.
