Critic Reviews for No Sudden Move

All Critics (108) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (98) | Rotten (10)

  • Bonus points for a regally menacing extended cameo by the great actor-director Bill Duke, who barely has to move (or speak) to impose his will on scenes.

  • Part of the fun of No Sudden Move is that we figure out what's going on almost as the characters do.

  • [It's] about characters who insist on trying to exert their freewill despite living in a world in which they have none - that itself is never insistent.

  • It's gorgeous to look at and, even though the plot might seem flimsy, it speaks with authority and says much about big business and the times lived, not just back then but now.

    July 9, 2021 | Rating: 3.5/4 | Full Review…
  • Every moment of exposition, every flare-up of personality: none of it comes off as mere talk, no bit of swindling feels as straightforward as a mere "Gotcha!" plot twist. It always feels active, alert, contained, stylish.

  • This movie intentionally doesn't offer the pure dopamine hit of Ocean's Eleven, but Soderbergh's ability to play so broadly within a single genre is just as thrilling.

  • For masters in any field, the game they play slows down. "No Sudden Move" doesn't need to show its hand; Soderbergh is three steps ahead and not looking like slowing down.

  • Critiques capitalism and institutional racism as effortlessly as it piles on the twists.
