Credit star Michelle Chen for playing it with a straight face. Her performance alone prevents this from fully degenerating into the Lindsay Lohan vehicle it otherwise is.
The lack of a strong inner conflict or neurosis for Lily ... makes the resolution of "Pali Road" prosaic, a lost opportunity.
As a travelogue for the green-and-blue lushness of the Aloha State, "Pali Road" has its postcard appeal, but for fans of love stories that split the mind and agitate the heart, this one is postcard-thin as well.
A lot of the weight of selling the story falls on Ms. Chen, and she's not entirely up to the challenge, but Mr. Lim is able to build suspense anyway.
"Pali Road" has pretty low expectations of its audience. It ought to be light on its feet, but it lumbers.
Adding to the appeal is the ability of [director] Lim and cinematographer Quyen Tran to make the Hawaiian landscape seem both beautiful and threatening, an element rarely seen in Hollywood's picture-postcard portrayals of the islands.
The unearthly beauty of Hawaii provides the sole reason to even think of looking at this absolute mess of a psychological thriller.
... employs a heavy-handed approach for an overwrought script that takes itself way too seriously before the ending really flies off the rails.
We get the Chinese exports that are huge blockbusters, but there's clearly a market for a slight, romantic mystery that in the United States would air on the Lifetime channel.
Damn if Jonathan Hua Lang Lim's Pali Road isn't hardcore Lifetime material. That's a compliment, because those can be good, pulpy fun.
Chen's full-bodied commitment to her role adds something new to this familiar scenario, which also benefits from its idyllic island setting; psychodrama and Hawaii pair surprisingly well.
