Movie Info

This special effects-heavy science fiction sequel moves the action from the first film's Amazon forest to the urban jungle of L.A. Danny Glover stars as Lt. Mike Harrigan, an LAPD detective baffled by his latest case, the ritualistic slaughter of several drug dealers by a devastating killer who leaves no traces. As Harrigan and his partners, Danny Archuletta (Ruben Blades), Leona Cantrell (Maria Conchita Alonso), and Jerry Lambert (Bill Paxton), try to figure out who or what killed the criminals, FBI investigator Stephen Keyes (Gary Busey) attempts to warn the team away from investigating further. When two of his team are killed in a particularly grisly way, Harrigan uncovers the truth -- their quarry is an alien creature that hunts humans for sport. Attracted to violence, its latest choice of prey is gun-toting Jamaican drug dealers. Keyes and his team know all about the nasty extraterrestrial and its bloody pastime because they've been studying it for ten years, and they've come up with a possible means of dispatching the beast. When that plan backfires, however, it comes down to Harrigan and an extremely irritated otherworldly foe, slugging it out in a rooftop confrontation. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Whilst some of the stylistic features seem to offer promising new directions for the Predator milieu, (such as Jamaican drug lords taking L.A. to seige, and Predator's updated arsenal) there's nothing in the execution that delivers the testosterone fuelled sense of mayhem and pleasure of the original. And let's face it, Predator was never a brilliant idea in the first place, and this movie, unlike the original, makes that abundantly clear.

Completely unnecessary sequel with some blaxploitation and banal cop genre.

When I was younger I always hated Predator 2. Rewatching it as an adult, I don't think it was fair how bad I thought it was. It's not that Predator 2 is crap, it's just that it's *so much worse* than the original (one of the 5 best movies ever made), that it comes across as such a massive disappointment. With fresh, or I guess more accurately, with more experienced eyes, I don't mind Predator 2 at all, there's actually a lot of stuff I like about it. It's still not a great movie to me, but I don't skip it when I'm doing a marathon like I would have once upon a time. It expands upon the Predator lore in some pretty cool ways, and the Jamaican Voodoo Posse inspired my Escher Necromunda gang, so I've wound up pretty 50/50 on the whole thing.

There is a cult following growing for this film but on watching this after the first you can't help the distaste. The best thing I can say about this film is that it adds so much more to the mythology we know about The Predators. The biggest issue the film has is the storyline, trading the soldiers for police was going to be a tough task. The film is much more in line with the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon tone, something that looks nice, just doesn't mean too much. Glover is no Arnold, but that isn't a bad thing, I think he is serviceable for this film. I just don't understand why The Predator was targeting the police when he was clearly out for the criminals. The film just lost me with too many plot holes and weak characters. I like the film for the guilty pleasure but in the end it was a weak sequel that has its fans. 17/09/2018.
