Denis Villeneuve builds a bleak, rain-soaked Pennsylvania where every frame feels heavy with dread, and Roger Deakins shoots it with such patient, muted beauty that even a quiet street looks threatening. Hugh Jackman gives one of his finest performances as a father coming apart, his grief turning into something frightening, while Jake Gyllenhaal quietly steals scenes as a detective whose tics hint at a past we never fully see. What impressed me most is how the film keeps asking uncomfortable questions about how far a person should go when the system seems too slow. Paul Dano and Melissa Leo add real unease, and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s score hums underneath everything like a warning. At two and a half hours it never drags, and the mystery stays tight until the final shot. It is not an easy watch, but it is a masterclass in tension and moral ambiguity, and one I keep returning to. It’s a film about pain, trauma, desperation, and how easily morality can erode when someone believes they’re trying to save a person they love. The movie places the audience in an incredibly uncomfortable position because we hear what Keller hears, which makes it impossible to judge him from a safe distance. The central contrast between a man of faith becoming monstrous through desperation and criminals trying to destroy faith through suffering is especially powerful. Gripping, morally uncomfortable, and incredibly well acted.
