Abbie Bernstein Assignment X Nov 18
Cwen handles her emotional extremes well, Grenzfurthner is unafraid to make Ernst a complete jerk, and Gratzner puts across Fredi’s hard-to-rattle attitude with aplomb. Go to Full Review

Solvent’s essential issue is that it’s a comedically infused horror film that’s neither frightening nor funny enough. Go to Full Review

Weird, creepy and deeply disconcerting, this English-language Austrian horror film delves into the lingering stain of Nazism as a force for recurring evil. Go to Full Review

An undeniably fascinating and frightful experience that makes truly creative use of modern and classic filmmaking techniques to make its points. Go to Full Review

The film’s chief crime isn’t that it’s pretentious, it’s that it’s boring. Go to Full Review

The film here shows an understanding of filmmaking and art that is deep enough to allow the filmmaker to break the rules and make his own rules to create films that are a sort of calculated assault on the sense. Go to Full Review

jake K @krauser 5d Already my favorite Nazi horror film of the decade. (And I’m not even that much into Nazis.) See more Kitten C @KittenCalfee 6d Innovative, intelligent and darkly charming in bold ways, this film accomplishes something new, distinctive and disturbing. Expect colorful characters and the curses of historical crimes to result in body horror scenes you’ve never seen before. See more zach N @zzachman 6d that was seriously off the charts See more Andrew L. @light4668 6d It was pretty ok the first half. Second half just went off the rails and was dumb. Bad acting and absurd voice overs that were supposed to be phone calls with random crap flashing on the screen. See more dennis B @dburgh 6d Formally, Solvent is a film of infected media. The found-footage and first-person style works because the cameras never seem neutral: helmet cams, investigation footage, old photos, and private fragments all promise to reveal the truth, but instead they pull us deeper into the contamination. The closer we look, the less control we have. Seeing more does not mean understanding more. The body horror is dirty, humiliating, absurd, and often bitterly funny. Urine, rot, black liquid, phallic imagery, and filth are not just there to shock; they make the film’s politics physical. Fascism is not shown as something clean, distant, or historical, but as something that leaks through family stories, neighborly comments, wellness nonsense, and provincial denial. Solvent offers no cleansing or easy ending. The farmhouse is not fixed, the past is not buried, and the title becomes cruel: a solvent dissolves things, but it also spreads what it touches. See more Timothy P @timop1919 May 7 The characters are really annoying and it makes it difficult to watch the whole thing though the story is ok. See more Read all reviews
