Strange Magic

Critics Consensus

Like most modern animated movies, Strange Magic is lovely to look at; unfortunately, there isn't much going on beneath the surface.

I don't mind me a musical, but I feel like the biggest issue with Strange Magic is the way they went with it musically. Not only was I just personally not a big fan of the singing voices on literally all but one of the characters, but I just think the continuous run of on-the-nose pop songs from beginning to end basically flat out ruined what seemed to be a promising movie.

From Lucasfilm comes the animated musical fantasy Strange Magic. The story follows a jaded fairy princess whose former finance attempts to win her back by tricking an elf into venturing into the dark forest to get a love potion for him. Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, and Peter Stormare, the film has a strong cast that does a great job at bringing the characters to life. And the CGI is really good, with a distinctive look and an impressive use of color. However, the plot relies too heavily on musical numbers and several of the songs get repeated over and over again. Strange Magic isn't without its charm, but it's a familiar tale that's been told before (and better).
