Critic Consensus: The Accountant writes off a committed performance from Ben Affleck, leaving viewers with a scattershot action thriller beset by an array of ill-advised deductions.

Movie Info

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department's Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.

Critic Reviews for The Accountant

All Critics (266) | Top Critics (45)

The Accountant is, begrudgingly, a pretty good time, especially once its solemnity gives way to its kitschy ode to familial pain.

The movie isn't some wicked subversion suggesting that the world is so corrupt that the bad guys are really the good guys. Rather it's a movie that can't figure out what might constitute a good or a bad guy in the first place.

Piles up plotlines like an overbuilt house of cards that comes crashing down at the first well-earned guffaw of ridicule.

The Accountant should be a straight-ahead thriller, but the film keeps tripping over its own incompetent feet. Maybe it was made for adults, but it sure doesn't feel like it was made by them.

Affleck plays a math wiz whose position on the autism spectrum allegedly makes him a perfect assassin. That notion is offensive on so many levels, especially in the service of such low-grade crime fiction, that it's painful to watch.

A movie that could easily have been familiar, disposable entertainment but is made with sufficient competence and energy to capture the viewer's attention and linger a little after the end credits have rolled.

Audience Reviews for The Accountant

The Accountant is bolstered by its intricate character played by Affleck as well as its sophisticated tropes and reveals. While its plot may be a bit too extensive and prolong the film still supplies the drama and efforts of being more than solid. 4/5

As diverting as "The Accountant" may be as a mild thriller, Affleck's portrayal of an autistic genius is perhaps less convincing that Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Richard III might be had we the misfortune to have it inflicted upon us. I am personally convinced that Anna Kendrick had the impression throughout the film that she was reprising her role in "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" -- but with math. As for Jon Bernthal, he would have been well advised to embrace his "Walking Dead" fate rather than attempt career resurrection with this film. "The Accountant" isn't well acted or directed and barely merits the two hours lost in your life.

It's a popular movie cliche anymore, one guy against armies of other guys, again. This time our guy is a misunderstood nerd who's military dad trains him to fight back, which is a nice touch (with a tip of the hat to Batman). Not bad.

It's an overexaggerated action movie but entertains the way it should!
