The Day Shall Come

Critics Consensus

Absurd yet anchored in knotty real-world themes, The Day Shall Come adds another bleakly funny satire to director/co-writer Christopher Morris' filmography.

Movie Info

An impoverished preacher who brings hope to the Miami projects is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fueling his madcap revolutionary dreams. Based on 100 true stories, the explosive new film from Chris Morris is an emotionally gripping, laugh out loud thriller that exposes the dark farce at the heart of the homeland security project: It is harder to catch a real terrorist than it is to manufacture your own.

  • Witty and surreal, yes, savagely satirical and often chilling, but it's not really rolling-in-the-aisles material.

  • The Day Shall Come has a disappointingly similar approach, while tackling a much less edgy and altogether easier-to-trounce subject.

  • It's a diverting scenario, though maybe it doesn't quite have the "danger - high voltage" thrill of Morris's other works.

  • It's a strange film that's never short of surprises, but as with Morris' best work, this subject might have been better served by a TV mockumentary.

  • Where 'Four Lions' is meticulously thought-through, this is a more scattergun sketch of politically motivated inhumanity.

  • The Day Shall Come is an angry film - funny at times but with an acidic underpinning.

As funny as the first 3/4 of the movie is, it doesn't compare with the gut punch of an ending which reminds you that this "satire" is essentially reality now.
