      Audience Says

Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan tap the tear ducts with this great-looking historical romance -- it's slow, but it'll make you feel like you've been to the British countryside before World War II. Read audience reviews

When it focuses on the titular dig the movie can often be quite moving, I just wish that the superfluous elements, which eat up a huge portion of the runtime, were as focused and nuanced.

If I was an archeologist I would've loved The Dig. But I'm not, and while it is beautifully filmed, the movie is overstuffed with too many simultaneous character dramas, world events and museum intrigue. But I may be falling in love with Carey Mulligan. After her spunky performance in Promising Young Woman, she is fantastic again as a sickly and pensive wealthy landowner. If you're a fan of English period pieces, warts and all, this is for you.

I can't honestly say that the premise of this film grabbed my attention but I was pleasantly surprised by the end results. Held together by two very well pitched performances from Carey Mulligan and, especially, Ralph Fiennes, The Dig is a somber and affecting true story juggling the themes of past, present and future. It's oddly captivating and, in all honesty, quite entertaining.
