It has a plot so unlikely and confused that we can't believe it for much more than 15 seconds at a time, but its action sequences are so absorbing and its mountaintop photography so compelling that we don't care.

There is indeed some great climactic Swiss Alps footage in this espionage tale, but the film runs an awkward gamut from supervillain cartoonishness to straight thriller. Its loutish humor also indulged its maker's (and audience's) worst tendencies...

It's a wild ride, and for all the flack Eastwood gets for being a bland filmmaker these days, he sure had no problems taking risks earlier in his directing career.

Along with Joe Kidd, the most underrated of Eastwood's '70s output.

Well, folks, in case you thought humorless, sexist, stupid movies had vanished from the screen, take heart - Clint Eastwood is back.

Nov 27, 2012A top-notch classic. A smart, well-crafted, exciting and intriguing action-thriller. A tense, topical and riveting thrill-ride packed with exciting climbing sequences and action scenes. Clint Eastwood is terrific, he`s stylish, cool and very confident in his performance and as director. A surprisingly effective and thrilling movie that's worth the visit. Even with today's standards this film still works.Al S Super Reviewer

Jun 07, 2012My favourite Eastwood film (along with 'High Plains Drifter') and surprisingly one of his less known directorial efforts. This film has a bit of everything for me: the spy element I'm used to with Bond (and with a great John Williams score), a fun training section with Kennedy and finally the Eiger climb which still looks effective even by todays standards. Add Eastwood to the mix and a fun performance from Cassidy as an over-the-top gay former friend/enemy (with a dog called Faggot, for god's sake!) and you have the makings of a great 70's thriller.David S Super Reviewer

Jan 30, 2009Based on the raunchy pulp novel by Rodney William Whitaker, written under the pseudonym Trevanian. Clint Eastwood's most interesting film. A top notch intelligence community action thriller.Pamela D Super Reviewer

Dec 26, 2008An entertaining lesser known Eastwood movie. Clint plays a retired assassin who's blackmailed into doing one last job. The acting of course is excellent from Eastwood, who's playing a slightly different role than we're used to. I also loved the really sharp dialogue (that's shockingly politically incorrect by today's standards) that's full of great one liners and an interracial relationship, which is something you hardly see in movies.Jonny C Super Reviewer
