It didn't take a genius to see that television was finally poised to win the war against movies. I just didn't expect my teacher to be leading the charge against theatrical exhibition.

The Irishman is a much more deliberate and weighty gangster film - by comparison, Goodfellas is a riot. But it's a vibe that works in its gravitas.

The affecting, ruminative finale and the melancholic last scene leaves a metaphorical door ajar in our hearts, a deep hollow that's hard to fill...

Despite its length, The Irishman is riveting. It confirms Scorsese as one of the great American filmmakers.

Jun 18, 2020Martin Scorsese teams up with Netflix to deliver the captivating crime drama The Irishman. Based on a supposed "true crime" novel, the film follows a teamster named Frank Sheeran who becomes a mob enforcer and goes to work for Jimmy Hoffa. Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel, the cast is especially strong and gives solid performances. Additionally, the de-aging CGI is pretty effective, allowing the actors to play a variety of ages; though there are times where their movements betray their real ages. The sets and costumes are also well-done, giving an authentic feel for the time-periods. However, the film is about an hour too long; including a lot of unnecessary and superfluous scenes. Yet despite a few weaknesses, The Irishman is a compelling film about the toll a life of crime takes.Dann M Super Reviewer

Dec 29, 2019This being nominated for SAG's "Best Acting Ensemble" is basically like when Bohemian Rhapsody won "Best Editing" at the Oscars. This uh... This movie's better though.Gimly M Super Reviewer

Dec 02, 2019The Irishman displays your typical Scorsese-motifs; lengthy narrative and narration, fluid cinematography & grisled-gang-violence. While its duration and pacing may cause one to add a few sit-ins to complete the film, it's still glued tightly by such magnanimous performances from DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci. 4.1/5Eugene B Super Reviewer

Dec 01, 2019It's definitely worth the hype, and definitely worth the 3 1/2 hours of viewing time. Set against the backdrop of the industrial Mid-Atlantic during some of the country's most turbulent political and social events, The Irishman is 2019's first perfect film - one that is so good, it doesn't even feel like it belongs in this decade, but rather feels like a masterpiece unearthed from decades earlier. De Niro, Pacino, Pesci are everything you want them to be and more in their performances; the writing, pacing, and editing are tight; the humor is dark, fast, and intelligent; and the story unravels beautifully . While the running time may require patience and dedication, there truly is no wasted moment - no extraneous or lagging scenes - as everything fits together seamlessly to deliver a payoff that is truly worth it.Matthew S Super Reviewer
