The Silence

Critics Consensus

The Silence has nothing new to say with a derivative premise and placid pacing -- even a wasted Stanley Tucci is unable to elevate the stodgy material a decibel above dreadful.

  • The estimable trio at the heart of the cast goes close to carrying the whole thing over the line, but it never feels as taut or kinetic as it needs to be.

  • There may come a time when the Netflix algorithm grows sophisticated enough to cut out the middle man and write its own scripts, but until that day arrives, niche-targeted dreck like "The Silence" will have to suffice.

  • Even the always-welcome Stanley Tucci can't add any flair to a movie that feels so much like a relative of John Krasinski's 2018 smash hit.

  • This is the most insidious type of knockoff: the one that sincerely expects you to believe that it's the real thing. Leave it to Netflix to take the fun out of incompetence.

Audience Reviews for The Silence

I'm glad they chose to ignore the books opening and move straight into the characters. The film is a weird combination of book loyalty and indie creature filmmaking. I wanted to love this film but they don't linger long enough on the events and don't spend enough time with the setups. The creatures in the book are more ferocious and the fear was dialled up to 11. I read the book around the same time as Bird Box and both ended up on Netflix. That's some boring back information for you. The filmmakers move along at an accelerated pace and we are soon at the bitter conclusion. This should've been longer. Stanley Tucci was a great pick for the lead but even he can't do something with nothing. This is just a disappointing film when the book offers so much more. 12/05/2019
