The Toybox is a tense indie horror film that combines ghostly thrills with a claustrophobic setting.
Alongside a few friends with a couple of drinks, you'll kick back and relish in a bargain bin treat that is enjoyably mindless.
I say this but it's sort of funny when something is this not-funny. Also funny is the way The Toybox shoehorns in a few dad-in-a-chimney Gremlins monologues for bizarrely-pitched pathos.
I'm shocked to say that I didn't hate The Toybox. I think it does just enough to be taken somewhat seriously and provides a few valid jump-scares. If you don't think about the plot too hard, you might even enjoy it.
Tom Nagel obviously had a plethora of ideas and wanted to experiment with them all at once, but this unfortunately leaves the film feeling top heavy and very clunky in its execution.
A thoroughly inept horror film likely to inspire more eye rolls than scares. Spare yourself this waste of time and leave The Toybox for the recycling bin.
The Toybox rises above being completely predictable with some interesting cinematic choices, and the decision to be unapologetically gruesome.
Mischa Barton and Denise Richards deserve better than this.
The Toybox may not be laughing, but at least we are.
