Critics Consensus

Vivarium may confound almost as often as it intrigues, but this well-acted sci-fi/horror hybrid has interesting ideas -- and explores them with style.

It's not perfect, but it's got some cool ideas, great performances, and incredible production design. A credit I'll give to the trailers of this movie is that while it seems like they show a lot, they really only give you the first 15 minutes or so. Trouble is, after that, there's not a whole lot more to the movie and I figured out what it was doing fairly quickly. You can get an idea from it's opening credits sequence and title alone. After that, after about the 30 or 40 minute mark I made a prediction of all the major beats the movie was going to take, and it turned out I was exactly right. On the other hand though, These plot choices did help instill the themes it was trying to tell. If it took some dramatic twist, it would undermine it's tale. I still wanted to see how it would all play out, but once I got there the ending was so dire it left me feeling a bit cold towards the movie. I really love these suburban commentary type of movies, and that's clearly what this is going for. It's a commentary on suburbia and really the human lifecycle as a whole, but it's so nihilistic in it's approach it left me kind of empty and sad by the end. I think that's the point, but to what end? Still the ideas are interesting, if not always successful, and they're presented in such a unique style there is part of me that admires it even when it doesn't always work.
