momo n 07/21/2023 Kyogen performer Mansai Nomura said of the Tokyo Dome performance of GIFT, "It is a modern-day Hamlet that is moving forward with words, body, and action," and I was astounded by his apt description. On the way to the station after the show, I overheard an audience member anxiously talking with his companion, "I wonder if he has recovered yet (from the Olympics, where he was not even allowed to fail). To the world, he was an athlete who kept working hard and never showed any signs of weakness. The audience probably did not expect to see "GIFT" as a show consisting of Yuzuru Hanyu's monologue about confronting his inner self. Why the title "GIFT"? When the solution to this mystery was revealed at the end of the show, I felt an inexpressible emotion swirling inside me at the conflicts that arose because he had chosen to live a thoughtful life and the importance of living with integrity as a human being. I felt that "GIFT" is a guidepost for people in the process of making a series of choices to live their lives in a lost way. Avant-garde stage direction by director MIKIKO, Rhizomatiks, and ELEVENPLAY. Live music by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and a special band. A spectacularly decorated stage, where he challenges with all his might. How much conflict did he have to face in expressing the beauty of art sports, which is both a sport and an art? He portrays it in a surprisingly unencompassing way. On the other hand, he does not always seek consent. The complexity of his personality is mysterious and makes you want to watch "GIFT" over and over again to ask yourself the same questions. It is an addictive work. The fact that Hanyu narrates his story in a poetic way, speaking of his dreams but without ever mentioning skating, letting it be a union between what is seen and what is felt to touch the soul of the spectator, allows the universalization of history, which ceases to be that of a single individual to become that of each of us.
