Audience Reviews for Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion

A stand-up-special-turned-indie-picture, "Live At The Purple Onion" nevertheless showcases comedy superstar Zach Galifianakis at his idiosyncratic best. He's been accused by many of being more of an Andy Kauffman tribute act than anything else, but make no mistake about it: Galifianakis has individuality to spare. Clocking in at just over an hour, the film flip-flops between segments of his stand-up routine (taped at the titular California club) and several behind-the-scenes type segments with the intention of giving the viewer a look into his life and, more importantly, into his process of being one of America's premier comedy talents. Some of the funniest stuff comes from Brian Unger interviewing Galifianakis' "brother" Seth (just the comedian sans beard), who talks, among other things, about their shared love of the Fugees. It's breezy, fun, and, yes, very funny. It's on Netflix, so I recommend devoting a spare hour somewhere in your schedule to this indelible slice of comedy.

"Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion" is a pretentious attempt to turn a stand-up special into an indie flick, obviously because the comedian (Zach Galifianakis) did not have enough material to fill up an entire hour. While there may be a few moments of hilarity (of which I counted about four), there is nothing laugh-out-loud funny. Galifianakis' comedic style is unfunny and awkward, mainly because all that he does is make fun of the crowd for a good half-hour.

There are some funny one liners and otherwise his routine became irritating after a while. For a stand-up comedian, there are better. 69/100

Zach's comedy is definitely an acquired taste. You see bits of it shine through in his roles on 'Bored to Death' or 'The Hangover' but his stand-up is much crazier! This film was hilarious! The mockumentary style filming of interviews with Zach's 'twin brother' Seth are the highlights! Watching Brian Unger try to not laugh during the interviews is some funny stuff! This one is currently on NETFLIX INSTANT...watch it now!
