What to Know

Critics Consensus

Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe.

Another capable notch in the writer/director’s belt, albeit one that’s too conservative—narratively speaking—for its own good. Go to Full Review

There are many ideas, themes and storylines, piling up quickly and not always convincingly integrated. It hardly matters at this stage, the whole shebang is wonderfully cinematic and romantically entertaining. Go to Full Review

1923 is brilliant. Taylor Sheridan’s writing is so taut it feels like the tension could snap at any moment, and Ben Richardson’s crisp and economic direction suits the weary, almost sullen mood. Go to Full Review

...a well-put-together drama that runs aground on Mirren’s baffling attempt to sound like a Victorian musical-hall caricature of an Irish person. Go to Full Review

1923 evidences Sheridan's effective narrative pulse... and above all, the exploration of the strength of its stars at the helm of a story that seeks the epic in the same way that its protagonists yearn for survival. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

See more Simon A @Sipeli Apr 12 Wow, ....after the amazing spectacle that was Yellowstone.....this is the moment that Taylor Sheridan got complacent.......Indiana Jones, meets True Grit with a dash of religious hypocrisy thrown in for rage measure....what utter, utter slow, dragged out, boring tripe this series is.....there another X amount of hours of my life, that I'll never get back. Poor in the extreme. See more Marco L @decatur555 Apr 11 1923 is a well-made and often impressive series, but it never reached the emotional level of Yellowstone or 1883 for me. It has all the visible strengths you would expect from Taylor Sheridan’s universe: strong production value, striking cinematography, major scale, and a cast led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who both bring real authority and presence. The problem is that, despite all that quality, the story often feels too predictable. The tension is there, the visual ambition is there, but I rarely felt truly surprised or deeply moved. Some storylines take too long to pay off, and the drama does not always match the weight of the presentation. It is still very watchable and clearly well crafted, but it feels more notable than unforgettable. Best show of the entire Yellowstone saga. See more Gregory S. @thisoneismyfavorite Mar 25 Epic tale of adventures and love for the Yellowstone ranch. I was supremely satisfied with whole story as it unfolds. It reels you in every step of the way and was really enjoyable. The dramatic landscapes are the backdrop of a long journey for the Duttons and those that revolve around the timeline. The only troubling thing I had questioned was Helen Mirans choice of accent. I don’t think it fit, but if I directed it I may have opted for pulling back on the Irish accent because I’m not sure I believed it fits the timeline. Epic story with twists, full of adventure, love and disappointment.
