Season 1
AJ and the Queen

Critics Consensus

Though it doesn't always come together, AJ and the Queen is a sweet, sometimes off-the wall adventure that's fun to watch even when it's fumbling.

Critic Reviews for AJ and the Queen Season 1

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (7)

The gospel Ruby-slash-RuPaul preaches is not one of great transformation but rather one of great transcendence, and the vision of queens as mini-Oprahs, capable of therapizing away America's wounds, is seductively comforting.

AJ and the Queen can be a lot of fun... But the series is riddled with scripting snags, potentially by virtue of trying to balance camp and commentary in hour-long episodes.

Despite some stumbles and clumsy writing, the first season of AJ and the Queen is a heartwarming, heartbreaking delight that lets you ride out every emotion while giving you a few laughs and some amazing drag, too.

Unfortunately, RuPaul continues to get in her own way in this series. Pretty annoying, since I wanted to love this series as a longtime RuPaul and Drag Race fan, a fan who sees the good and the bad of RuPaul's reign.

Fasten your seatbelts, as Netflix's AJ and the Queen is a rambling, overlong road odyssey.

'AJ and The Queen' is a pleasant comedy for lovers of the classic pop divas, sequin and musical numbers. [Full Review in Spanish]

Language and mature humor in charming drag comedy.

If nothing else, hopefully watching RuPaul explore the world of smalltown drag will inspire you to go out and support your local queens.

It's evident that AJ and the Queen wants to cover many stories and balance different tones to the point that it becomes a pastiche. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's trying to be everything and the product is a show whose seams don't quite match up.

RuPaul, my dear, you may be the Queen of Drag Race. But when it comes to scripted programming, you stall out at the starting line. I'm sorry, my dear, you are up for cancellation.

I can't say that the show is...good. Bless RuPaul for finding gravity and soulfulness in some upsettingly saccharine dialogue, a contrast to the sassily-delivered one-liners he delivers with grade-A charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.

May need to be a RuPaul fan, but if you are this is a must!

It's one of the kindest series there is, overwhelmingly so. World needs more unconditional kindness and cheerful extraordinary series like AJ and the Queen. It's also fresh and different, for those, who is tired of watching flat and resembling each other stories over and over again. Need season 2!

BEST SHOW EVER! It's such a great story. Its unrealistic in its portrayal of how people react to LGBT and drags... but that's part of its beauty... imagining a world that's more accepting. The characters are all amazing except the villains which feel too much like disney villains. By far the best Netflix has to offer

Im sad it was cancelled. I liked this netfilx show

Fun and surprising. Such a surprising cast that pulls off drag queens so well, sometimes you don't know they are men even when watching series.

This show was trying to be too many things at once, a coming of age story? sure a tentpole for the LGBTQ community totally, fan service for Drag Race viewers, no doubt. This mess made the story at the core suffer.

An absolute gem. I was dubious about it all to start with. I'd heard that reviews were not very favourable but I love this series. AJ is an absolute stand out and Ru, while a bit clunky at first, is a delight. The show is incredibly touching and has so much heart. For a show to work you need to connect with the characters and I've absolutely done that with this show. It was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

I ran across this show on Netflix and started watching it and really enjoyed it. Next thing I know my whole family is hooked on watching and we're wanting the second season ASAP PLZ!!!

I love Rupaul and the message about sexual identity, but this dragma is so cringe; Poor acting and bad jokes its unwatchable. The show was cancelled not even a month after the release and I was not surprise to see it sashayed away.

It's fun, easy, breezy. Sometimes funny sometimes sad. Many many dragqueens from the show get a lil airtime. If youre a fan of the show thats really fun. Only note: RuPaul only does oldschool covers. With some newer music he would have gotten a younger audience as well.
