Baptiste: Series 1 (2019)

Series 1
Baptiste

Critics Consensus

Though Baptiste does little to distinguish itself from The Missing, jolting twists and a deliciously jittery performance by Tom Hollander provide ample enough enticement for mystery fans.

Critic Reviews for Baptiste Series 1

All Critics (23) | Top Critics (11)

A quietly unfolding drama in six episodes, it's coolly gripping and well thought-out.

Apr 10, 2020 | Full Review…

After something of a slow start, Baptiste starts to gain momentum and the way it delivers narrative curveballs is striking. So is Mr. Karyo's stolid portrayal of Baptiste.

Apr 9, 2020 | Full Review…

A disappointing conclusion to a series which never quite justified its existence.

Happily, Baptiste's brain surgery has been a success and he's back.

Hopefully he will find a little more energy as the case ramps up.

Mar 7, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

He's Baptiste. And played with pitch-perfect understatement and confidence by Tchéky Karyo, there's still more than enough of him to make for a fine crime drama.

Apr 10, 2020 | Full Review…

Baptiste remains grimly compulsive viewing - driven by an intelligent and twisting script, as well as a trio of excellent performances.

Across European nationality, the multi-lingual cast is amazing.

Nov 18, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

In a subtly mesmeric performance, Karyo captures the determination and grind necessary to wade through such a dark murky world in a desperate, sometimes futile, attempt to save the lost.

Tom Hollander is the one who makes the most of the enigmas of his character and transmits the darkness that follows him. [Full Review in Spanish]

Almost amateurish, seems like a RAI fiction
  • Jul 20, 2020
He's old and run out of steam. The acting is as good as can be. The plot has been told before. Time to retire, Baptiste.

Tried to delete my review but I cant

Loved Baptiste. A compelling mystery with an elderly, retired detective who is smart and compassioate. I looked forward to it on Sunday night as tv highlight. I hope there are many more episodes.

Huge fan of Baptise...loved his character on The Missing...want more!
  • May 18, 2020
Really outstanding series, each episode better than the last. The actors nothing short of superb. The suspense just keeps building and building and just never stops. Probably the best thing I've seen this year. I'm hoping for a second series.

It's that old "over-the-hill male called back to duty" plot, and retired French detective Julien Baptiste screws up so often, you'll think he should just stay home and spend his days solving jigsaw puzzles. The storyline starts out realistically enough, but the less than believable plot twists and Baptiste's tiresome pontificating made me wish my Firestick had a more user-friendly fast forward.
  • Apr 20, 2020
Fantastic character, writing and stories. Baptiste is one of my favorites.
  • Apr 15, 2020
The trailer for this show looked intriguing plus I liked the story being set in Amsterdam. I knew of Tom Hollander's work so I thought I'd give the show a try. I was blown away by the series. Outstanding plot and intriguing story. Tchéky Karyo who plays Baptiste is such an amazing actor. I didn't realize this series was a spin-off of "The Missing". So I binged watched these out of order! I am now suffering from post series depression. I miss his character! I truly hope they make a season 2.
