Adult Swim is never afraid to go beyond the boundaries of what most people consider good taste, so the not-necessarily-PC premise of this show shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. "Black Jesus" spotlights Jesus living in modern-day Compton, Calif., trying to spread love and kindness throughout his neighborhood on a daily basis. Mostly assisting in his mission is a small-but-loyal group of downtrodden followers. The live-action series was created by Aaron McGruder, who previously brought the animated favorite "The Boondocks" to Adult Swim.

For the most part, Black Jesus is a pleasant, relatively mindless high, and like an eager-to-please stoner, it's generally fun to hang out with for 20 minutes at a time. Go to Full Review

Aaron McGruder's new live-action comedy for Adult Swim, Black Jesus, is a modern-day religious farce bathed in the best kind of sin. Go to Full Review

There's a sweetness underneath its scabrous, sacrilegious exterior, as Johnson's Jesus puts his own spin on all the greatest hits while endeavoring to establish a community garden. Go to Full Review

The ridiculousness of the situations and mindstates of the characters is often used to illuminate some actual real world social issues. Go to Full Review

03/09/2021 Absolutely racist. Offensive in every way and a disgrace to my religion. See more 12/09/2015 No over kill jokes. Just flat out hilarious. See more 09/08/2015 Aaron McGruder's follow up to The Boondocks lacks the satirical sharpness you'd expect from him. But it still proves a good natured, comical look at religion, the inner city and what it means to be a good person. And all comes together thanks to a brilliant performance from Gerald 'Slink' Johnson. See more 11/07/2014 Adult Swim's first (and hopefully premiere) season of Black Jesus is a smart, well-written, incredibly funny satire/semi-stoner comedy. Johnson brings an incredible energy and atmosphere to his performance as Jesus, bringing most audiences to believe he could be the real deal, even if some of the characters don't. MacGruder, also known for his incredible work creating The Boondocks, continues to show his talent in the writing for this show. The supporting cast are also very well-picked, Witherspoon continuing to show he can play almost any role perfectly, and Murphy bringing his hilarious attitude to Vick the landlord. See more 11/06/2014 Black Jesus is the son of Shrek and is completely recognized within my pantheon. See more 10/07/2014 fuck ya dam fine work in the hood baby See more Read all reviews
