This offbeat comedy series stars Jason Schwartzman as young writer Jonathan Ames, who turns his fantasies culled from reading suspense novels into a moonlighting stint as a private detective in Brooklyn, N.Y. As he begins working cases, though, Jonathan finds his crumbling personal life getting in the way of his clients' expectations, not to mention his needy boss, magazine editor George Christopher, interfering with his new career. His best friend, struggling graphic artist Ray, offers advice and a shoulder to lean on. Author Jonathan Ames created the series.

It's one of those small comedy series that operates a bit like an indie movie, with offbeat humor and characters. Go to Full Review

I'm not quite sure what the future holds for Bored to Death, but it gave its viewers a taste of the fetishized Brooklyn lifestyle, highlighting struggles with growing up... and longing for a life full of mystery where there wasn't any mystery before. Go to Full Review

The show is an embarrassment of riches wasted on meaningless, navel-gazing cuteness. Go to Full Review

Overall, the episode hit all of the right notes. It included a great display of friendship between Jonathan, Ray and George... There are still a few issues left unresolved in anticipation of next season. Go to Full Review

02/03/2014 PLEASE. HBO...Bring it back. If you do it, I shall watch with delight and laughter in my heart.. More than likely it was cancelled because the 3 main characters became so inundated with major roles in other films (I know that Zack was in at leaat 4 movies the following year) or tv shows (Ted went to another show) and Jason was in quite a few films also. As one reviewer said, it wasn't so much that it was a mystery show but rater a show about relationships that ran so deep and so beautiflly written. I take my hat off to Jonathan Ames even if they do put me in Riker's Island and i do lose my home! What a great writer. And the ensemble cast was PERFECT. There were some lines that will remain with me forever. One was Ted Danson telling Mary kay Place "Well, I'm a Libertarian, too. Fiscally responsible but out of control in bed". Just everything was wonderful. F. Murray Abraham (Oscar winner from Amadeus) playing a junkie professor and needing his original copy of "On the Road" back from his drug dealers. because he looked up on eBay or somewhere else that it was worth so much more than he thought. That entire episode was so hilarious thanks to Schwartsman, John Hodgman (The P.C. guy in the tv commercials before), Zack and Ted. Casting agent for this show should prove once and for all there MUST be not only an Oscar for casting agents but an EMMY also. I wish with every bone in my body that they will reprise this show again. Jonathan....GET ON IT!!!!! See more 01/30/2014 Not too bad of a show, just alright See more Read all reviews
