Critics Consensus

A sturdy vehicle for Daniel Dae Kim, Butterfly spreads its wings only modestly but delivers dependable thrills and familial drama.

Butterfly is always on the verge of becoming really compelling, only to have the drama interrupted by another shoot out, martial-artsy brawl or race through the streets of Seoul or Busan. Instead of revelations, we get twists. Go to Full Review

Daniel Dae Kim and Reina Hardesty help elevate Prime Video's thriller series, which often hits the right balance between taut thriller and family drama. Go to Full Review

As is, it’s a middling watch with a good performance from Kim. Go to Full Review

A series indistinguishable from half a dozen other genre thrillers — except maybe for the locations. Go to Full Review

An audacious season finale could leave fans stranded if Amazon decides Butterfly has a short life cycle, but well choreographed action sequences and a strong lead performance from Daniel Dae-Kim make it a gamble mostly worth taking. Go to Full Review

Kos M Dec 6 The obnoxious daughter/son and the daddy/mommy issues every time. Her character feels like it was written by AI. Character motives make no sense for the most part, most of them feel fake and it gets worse and worse till the silly end See more Alette G. @LettiSketti Nov 15 Fun new spy action thriller that has a unique voice while keeping with what makes movies and shows like this fun. See more Brian H Oct 8 It was ok but not the greatest. The only reason I watched this was because I liked Piper in Covid Affairs and thought that was pretty good. But Butterfly is kind of like that so it was sort of fun to watch. See more Edward L @Glyndower Sep 20 A good pursuit thriller marred only by the usual wooden performance by Piper Perabo (as bad as her appearances in 'Yellowstone') and an annoying tendency to tell the back-story by means of flash-backs. Hopefully the cliff-hanger ending indicates a second season is on the books. See more Andrew S Sep 11 Given the lead is supposed to be a decent guy why doesn’t he express any remorse for the multiple people who die trying to help him? And given he was running a successful booze business, it seems inexplicable that nobody noticed he wasn’t really dead. And why did the super assassin mess around with knives when a gun would have been much better? So many plot holes and it was too rushed. A proper Korean drama has about 20 episodes! See more William N @William125 Sep 8 Within the first 20 minutes of this series you get to see the same old hollywood tropes on display. Another boring girl boss character who is poorly written. Our girl boss heroine takes down a highly trained body guard who is twice her size. Just stop already and get rid of the cookie cutter tropes that get recycled over and over again.
