In the 93rd year of the Sentence of Sand, the world is covered by oceans of sand and 513 people live in isolation on the Mud Whale, an islandlike ship that is adrift on the sand. As he investigates an abandoned ship that has drifted up to the Mud Whale, Chakuo -- the island's archivist who is endowed with special powers -- meets a mysterious girl named Rikosu. It marks the first time that an island inhabitant has made contact with someone from the outside world. Chakuro wonders if it is a sign that a new world awaits.

With a fascinating speculative world, truly stunning animation, and a compelling premise, it could have been one of the best fantasy series of the decade. Instead, it's dry, exposition-heavy, and fails to deliver on any of its early promises. Go to Full Review

Paul S @RT95208408 Apr 22 This show is just a pile of played out cliches and lazy writing. It is not an underrated hidden gem, but rather a forgotten dung heap. See more 09/13/2020 What if the first time you see a gun is when one is pointed at you? To make this unique, compelling series, the studio dared to do things nobody else was doing--and I don't just mean the breathtaking visuals. The story deliberately parallels the early waves of Western imperialism, told from the perspective of those experiencing the massacres and colonizations, struggling to understand it all while holding their society together. Against them are nations whose existence they've only just discovered--soldiers without empathy who've sacrificed their emotions to a god in exchange for blood and treasure. One remarkable feature of the series is that it never belittles nonviolence or pacifism. The story unfolds mainly as a dialogue between the characters who promote peace (albeit naively) and the ones whose violence is driven by their own pain and emptiness. The show has a weird habit of presenting paradoxes and unexplained behaviors, then resolving or explaining them a few episodes later. Relax: it's just part of the heroes' journey to discover the truth about their world. I look forward to what answers, and what questions, season 2 will bring. See more 06/03/2020 The Children of the Whales is truly an underrated show that I believe everyone must see. Although the story has a fictional setting, it still leaves a sense of reality and tackles controversial topics such as war, violence, and even human emotions. It left me in awe and wondering if emotions are truly human flaws. You may have seen magical powers used in other shows but this anime show takes this concept differently. The creators took the "mahou" aspect combined it with humane realities. I enjoyed every second of the story and the visuals of the anime is only the cherry on top, additionally the music made me wanting more. I excitedly await for season 2 and hopefully you as well. See more 06/12/2019 Despite its small flaws, this gorgeous post-apocalyptic fantasy anime draws the viewer quickly into its world - only to end just as quickly after just 12 short episodes, with no word on a second season See more 10/20/2018 Just the art is worth the watch. The themes of what it means to be human and a community are shown effectively and creatively through the story and characters. It also critiques violence, maybe in reaction to other anime. If that's enough to get you interested, then I think you'll like it. If not, I wouldn't recommend it. See more Read all reviews
