Critics Consensus

Eastbound & Down's fourth season is more grounded in reality -- if that can even be possible -- as we say goodbye to an obnoxious anti-hero that somehow managed to grow on us.

Critic Reviews for Eastbound & Down Season 4

I regret thinking that it was pointless to bring the show back after the seeming finality of its third season, because the evolution of media star Kenny was the best thing the show had done.

Eastbound, rightly, treats the very idea of dude-ish self-pity with the outright mockery it deserves.

Oct 24, 2013 | Full Review…

The show's closer takes many bold steps, ones that keep the character true to his skewed ideals and graceless, tasteless take on life as he leaves our screens forever. I miss Kenny Powers already.

Jun 4, 2018 | Full Review…

It's clear that there's still plenty left to explore with this show, and that the new side of Kenny Powers we get to see was worth bringing the show back for a second ending in and of itself.

It's been real. Katy Mixon, do my hair and/or be my wife.

Though I liked the way the third season of Eastbound and Down ended, I'm glad HBO gave the show another stab at its series finale.

Jan 3, 2014 | Full Review…

Eastbound & Down gave closure to four seasons of what could possibly be described as the biggest bait-and-switch on television -- a show that started as a sports farce and ended as a poignant reminder that you can't always judge a book by its cover.

Oct 22, 2018 | Full Review…

In its way, over the years, behind all the crude turns and vulgar behavior, had a sweetness to it, an earnest, simple-minded optimism that made it strangely akin to that other slightly twisted HBO comedy on modern struggle and advancement, "Enlightened."

The show's more interesting than it was last season, as well. The season premiere opened strong with one of Eastbound & Down's all-time best installments.

Jun 4, 2018 | Full Review…

Eastbound and Down deserves praise because it never labored or hit an extended rough patch.

Jun 4, 2018 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Put simply, Kenny Powers is great. He's one of the strongest comedic characters I've seen on television since Homer Simpson.

Jan 3, 2014 | Full Review…

Even when the show is funny and outrageous...there are things going on under the surface that are very real and very difficult, and that's what continues to make Eastbound and Down such an impressive surprise each week.

The final season just doesn't supply the laughs. It's no surprise it didn't make a season 5.
  • Nov 08, 2018
It’s not as funny as the previous seasons, but it does offer a more satisfying conclusion than the one season three would have left us with.
  • Sep 14, 2018
Best finale of a show of all time. Even though every season it was a big question if it would get renewed they managed to keep it fresh and funny. Best show of all time!
  • Jun 15, 2014
Absolutely amazing! A great ending to a great series. When you think it can't get any better, this happens. Whilst in this season we do see changes in the game, we are still in the same ball park and the owner of the said park is Kenny F#%ing Powers!
  • Mar 29, 2014
    absolutely hysterical.
  • Feb 15, 2014
While season three would have served for a great ending for the series alone, thankfully the writers realized there was still more story to tell, and offered us a finale for Kenny Power's legacy that was as triumphant as it was transcendent. Pure comedy gold, and also one of the best character studies tv has ever produced!
  • Dec 18, 2013
one of the best shows out there.
