Fear the Walking Dead: Season 1 (2015)

Season 1
Fear the Walking Dead

Critics Consensus

Fear the Walking Dead recycles elements of its predecessor, but it's still moody and engrossing enough to compete with the original.

Critic Reviews for Fear the Walking Dead Season 1

All Critics (62) | Top Critics (32)

Fear the Walking Dead feels like a worthy extension because it gives another perspective, from Los Angeles, on a global crisis. There are stories beyond Rick Grimes and his fearless, tested band.

The new series lacks a beating heart -- even a black one.

Nothing serves a horror story like a good build. Or, in the case of L.A. itself, a slow crumble.

Even if zombies aren't your cup of TV, there is plenty to appreciate about the construction of Fear the Walking Dead.

Fear the Walking Dead prequel might just as well be called Milking The Walking Dead For All It's Worth.

I doubt that the rampaging hordes - and by this I mean the bloodthirsty and highly opinionated legions of "Walking Dead" fans - will eat that up.

It feels like writers are trying so hard to humanize these characters, they're forgetting their audience. Society is breaking down and people are being eaten; however, it doesn't seem to be impacting this series.

Fear The Walking Dead has a solid start that encourages you to keep an eye on the story. AMC knows how to exploit the zombie hen for the golden eggs. [Full Review in Spanish]

For the most part, Fear the Walking Dead aims to pick up something the mothership lost along the way, specifically an existential horror behind all the gore.

What I can take away from the first 60-minutes of "Fear the Walking Dead" is that it's aiming to be rich in characters, with Frank Dillane stealing the show.

Audience Reviews for Fear the Walking Dead: Season 1

  • Apr 18, 2019
This is my favorite season of the series. I think they should develop events of outbreak slower and make it more about the beginning of the apocalypse. Even bringing different stories and people, not focusing on only one family and how people struggle through this catastrophe. But now "Fear" is not about fear any longer but a bad copy of "The Walking Dead" show. What a pity!!! I hoped it would be better...Sigh

Its not the walking dead but so far not bad at all!

Not quite much as the beginning of the walking dead series, but watchable enough..
  • Sep 17, 2018
good show but the actors are made out to be so dumb and ignorant. turning on light for every zombie to see. the boy Chris is also very dumb why do the parents go after him when they know he's just going to be so reckless

I’ve watched from day 1...and season 1 while not perfect really showed the confusion about what it’d be like to walk thru the crumbling of civilization and especially a zombie apocalypse. I understand how people who love the original can be annoyed by the lack of knowledge of the characters but that’s the point. They are just learning what this is and how to deal with it and the audience gets to learn with them. It’s worth the watch!

The characters are flat and uninteresting and do little to advance a dreary plot with little action and zero intrigue.
  • Feb 22, 2018
When the zombies end up being more likable than the characters and the story becomes so senseless at the season finale, I'm amazed this show is still on the air.

It's good but so slow and they said it was going to happen fast but it was slow based I like most of the characters their great to me but the problem to me was slow based 8/10

A prequel or companion show to the behemoth that is the walking dead. The show starts with the early rumblings of a zombie apocalypse. Focusing on the impact on a big city is promising but the characters we will follow are a little bland. The show seems willing to let's things build slowly and does not have a reliance on hero moments...a bit slow for some but, if you stick with it the final few episodes are very good.

For a show about the walking dead, you wouldn't expect it to be so boring.
