Critic Consensus: Game of Thrones' final season shortchanges the women of Westeros, sacrificing satisfying character arcs for spectacular set-pieces in its mad dash to the finish line.

Critic Reviews for Game of Thrones Season 8

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (1)

Even at its wobbliest, these final episodes demonstrate a stunning degree of filmmaking skill that find even the weakest installments standing head and shoulders over most recent feature films of a similar nature.

Game of Thrones found purpose. Not to press our faces to the fire, but to show us those already burned, and teach us how to hold their suffering.

If only [David] Benioff and [DB] Weiss had had more faith in these quiet moments. Instead, they tried to load as many epic battles and as much incredible CGI into the final season as they could.

Season eight made the regrettable mistake of giving half its time to an underwhelming villain at the expense of the characters who made the show special in the first place.

Daenerys and Cersei are portrayed as too ambitious and emotionally unfit to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Season 8 is the weakest, but it's still good. It's just "Good" in amongst a series that constantly hit "Excellent" makes it really stand out...

[This season] made choices that I just didn't understand...you have to wrap it up somehow, and this season is just full of more extremes and it just doesn't work anymore or fit in with the rest...

Season 8 doesn't feel like it was earned, with too little time dedicated to growing characters paired with a greater emphasis on rushing to major plot points, rather than proving to those of us watching how inevitable they were.

I don't think anyone can be happy that this season focused, in the end, on Jon Snow, the least complicated main character on an ensemble full of brutal instincts and grasping ambition.

This concluding season may not live up to its promise, but it finds a sense of peace for its survivors.

Audience Reviews for Game of Thrones: Season 8

The worst ending of a fantastic show.

technicaly speaking it was a satisfyng season as always but the lackness of logic, good dialogues, character development and coherency destroyed the plot that was built so far. For me Got ends with season 6.

I was a fan from the first episode. I spent almost a decade following these characters, watching them grow or in many cases, meet their end. And when I watched one f the characters I'd seen grow and change died, a part of me died too. But instead of a peaceful, respiteful death I've experienced up until know whenever I watch someone die, season 8 brutally murdered a whole chunk of me. The chunk that was hoping for proper resolutions and engaging narratives with minimal plot holes and interesting twists. By the end of S8 I was watching out of loyalty and in recognition of the hard work the actors and team who put the episodes together physically had put in, and man did they deliver. But what the season utterly fails in is writing. I have rarely seen such inept writing in my whole life throughout the hundreds of shows I've seen. A fanfic would've had more effort put into it than the cheesy lines, giant plot holes and horrendous character resolutions that made up S8. Game of Thrones is an experience you shouldn't miss, except for the last season. It'd be better to watch the show from the beginning and just pretend the show was cancelled after season 7. May God have mercy on your souls David Beinoff and DB Weiss.

As much as I loved the first few seasons of GoT, the last season was a disappointment. The dialogue was terrible, no logic in the plot line, a lot of things were missing, and character development was thrown out the window. D&D, you disappointed everyone. The actors, the cinematography, the CGI, and the music were all incredible, but the the writing, logic, and plot were just terrible.

The final season to one of the greatest shows of all time.….sadly....this season felt like the showrunners just decided to rush to an ending that made little to no sense. It was like they crammed 4 seasons worth of material into just a few episodes.

I love Game of Thrones, and there were some beautiful moments in season 8, but the finale is so awful, it's hard to watch and accept.

This season was absolute garbage from a story and writing standpoint. The acting, costumes, cgi were great as usual, and the cinematography and music were among the best I've ever seen. But the writing was rushed, lazy, and sloppy. Character arcs were tossed aside for spectacle and motivations were abandoned for "moments." I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a season and season finale.

What a disappointment.

Obviously not perfect and there were many flaws. But I enjoyed it overall.

Nice special effects, but the ending sucks. Actually the whole season is mediocre, besides of the special effects (dragons) episodes
