Gangs of London has copped criticism for its visceral brutality, but the brilliant cast, the character development, and its unromanticised depiction of a grimy, multi-ethnic underworld are compelling.

Action fans will find plenty to unpack in this no-holds-barred violent juggernaut assault to the senses.

It may be harrowing at times but with its first-rate cast, clever direction and incisive writing full bore, Gangs of London is always fascinating to watch.

Not for the faint hearted, Gangs of London is tough as nails and addictive as hell.

The highly choreographed action scenes are nothing short of stunning, but series creators and action-movie veterans Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery know that it's the characters that really do the heavy lifting.

Without that heart, "Gangs of London" would just be another slickly made gangster entertainment. With it, it's one of Gareth Evans' best accomplishments of his career to date.

Gangs of London's family drama, constantly changing motivations, and overall mystery make it a solid choice to fill the Succession or Game of Thrones-sized hole in your TV schedule.

It takes its story very seriously, "Gangs" does, but it's also audacious enough to engender good will and enigmatic enough to keep one engrossed.

Joe Cole gives a memorable performance as he channels his inner Al Pacino with a calm and calculated menace, while Sope Dirisu delivers the action chops.

A bold continuation of the mafia movie tradition, yet like the inexperienced figures at its center, the show carves its own enthralling path.

Right from its breathtaking and harrowing opening scene, Gangs delivers stylish, bravura, cinematic storytelling that's not for the faint-hearted.

It's Mt Panorama with accelerator and no brakes.

My only problem with it is down to the length. It's a 90 minute opening episode and it's a long 90 minutes too.

The violence and head splattering gore are relentless and it's perfectly choreographed fight scenes could be mistaken for a much darker version of Swan Lake. This one is not for the faint-hearted.

I am a grown up. I don't like violence but know it has a place on screen and I can take it. But when it's as brutally cynical as this, and as geared to a fanboy audience as this, I can't take it so well.

The show does well to quickly build its own mythology, and there are interesting elements sprinkled throughout related to class, race and poor.

GoL was clearly expensive to make. It is also very, very violent, and in creatively balletic ways.
