Gravity: Season 1 (2010)

Critic Consensus: A comedy about a suicide support group, Gravity is either eccentric and intriguing or an insufferably smug, unpleasant quirk-fest, depending on your point of view.

Gravity: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

"Gravity" focuses on the lives of people who met each other while attending the same suicide survivor program. Lily (Krysten Ritter) is a depressive with serious daddy issues. Robert (Ivan Sergi) becomes the focus of her affections, but he's still mourning the death of his wife, and dealing with the fallout of becoming infamous after a tape of his attempted suicide went viral. Dogg (Ving Rhames) is a one-time professional athlete adjusting to life in a wheelchair. Shawna (Rachel Hunter) used to be a model, and struggles with an unhealthy taste for much younger men. Each member of the group must confront how their actions have altered not only their own lives, but the lives of everyone in their circle.

Shows shouldn't require such a leap of faith to be enjoyable, but Gravity provides modest rewards in return.

It's very dark. It's very weird. It's also hard to stop watching.

Writer-director-producer Schaeffer clearly loves his cast of odd, damaged characters - and his own role as a creepy cop who steals suspects' panties and totes his glock to yoga. But for the rest of us, the end result is DOA.

Gravity is just about as unpleasant and unlikable a show as you're likely to see this year.

Gravity knows exactly how to make you laugh and when you should cry.

Gravity starts out as a show about an attempted suicide survivors support group and ends up as a show about one of its co-creator's massive egos.

It might be possible to make a good show in which a suicide support group served as the framework for an offbeat relationship comedy, but for now Gravity is flying through the air and losing altitude fast.

The series cries out for a modern update of the old ad slogan "Where's the beef?" - as in, "Where's the show?" And the ever-popular "What's it about?"
