I really liked this series. It's strangely humorous and has a very different approach to the subject than I've seen elsewhere. Some of the criticisms I've seen in other reviews don't make a lot of sense to me. I'm glad they limited the scope of their presentation to a handful of dictators, and I'm very happy they didn't insult their audience's intelligence by going on about current geopolitics. Anyone with half a brain can figure out how to apply these concepts to autocrats who aren't mentioned explicitly, including present ones. Some very qualified researchers were involved in this project and I think it works really well.

I was curious about the show, but as the episodes go on, you realized that it's completely biased and pro US/Western World/Capitalism. For example in Gadhaffi, at no moment they mention that it's US/European military intervention that causes the fall of the dictator (and thus the current civil war still raging on in Libya) and blame him for not following the book instead, which is a completely stupid assumption. From that point it was impossible to give any credibility this show.

This is like a modern documentary on Machiavelli's Prince. It was interesting to watch, and I think everybody should see it, or everybody should read Machiavelli to understand the world around us.

I really like this little series. It manages to portray some really dark, depressing history in a fun and interesting way, without being insensitive or ignoring how terrible all these people were. I've seen complaints that it doesn't feature certain people, and while I get that, it only has six episodes, and I think it chose well on who to feature, you have your big names, Hitler, Hussein, Stalin, along with your perhaps lesser known ones, Amin, Gaddafi, and Kim Jong-Il. They cover a lot of the world geographically, from Europe to Africa to the Middle East to Asia, and all of them are fascinating people who match the guidebook, whereas other leaders, like mao and Assad, are certainly interesting and downright terrible like everyone else here, but may not have fit into the same framework as much or be as spread out geographically. I personally thought that king George or king henry viii might be included, but I'm glad they weren't since they didn't fit the framework as much and would limit the scope geographically. Also I've heard complaints that it doesn't address anyone still in power right now, but I personally don't mind that at all. It shows you the stories of these older people and how they were tyrants, then challenges you to look for tyranny in the modern world. For me, that's golden. Not every tv or movie program needs some big political or social modern message to broadcast, I like it when they just allow you to look at the world yourself with a more critical and trained eye. Anyway, i loved it.

really want this to be renewed for season 2! there are so many epic tyrants that were alluded to but not featured - like Mao. really want a full episode of him!

It is really hard to figure out why did they miss the most notorious tyrant who killed the most, Mao Zedong. It is so unbelievable because Mao just perfectly fitted into all the episodes. Shame on Netflix.

This docuseries was really good. The documentarians did a fantastic job on this series about the most tyrannical leaders in world history. It really goes into detail about what each of these leaders did in order to seize power over their countries and the evil things they did in order to obtain their power. People shouldn't rule this way because in the end it always turns against them and they end up dying or living in exile. If you're a Netflix member you should watch this series sometime. It's very interesting.

This show was very informative and funny given some of the horrible people and topics covered. In the show, the playbook they refer to is a guidebook to gaining power. What was frankly a little scary was seeing parallels to the modern-day and what some politicians try to pull off to get or maintain power.
