Depraved underachieving might look easy, but for the egocentric Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Frank and Dee, it's an art form; "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" follows "The Gang," the owners of the unsuccessful Paddy's Pub; a group of degenerates who loves nothing more than to scheme, conspire, and mostly revel in each other's misery; whether gaming the welfare system, exploiting dumpster babies, pretending to be crippled, impersonating officers or faking funerals, The Gang never stoops too low in the name of making a buck.

Critics Consensus

Unlike Paddy's merry band of morons, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia remains sharp and spry in its advanced age.

A perfect example of the cult series’ surreal, sociopathic anti-charm. Go to Full Review

Mac (Rob McElhenney, now credited as Rob Mac), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) show no signs of getting their shit together anytime soon, and once again it’s to television’s benefit. Go to Full Review

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia drops the ball on gender and racial representation, but it has a moving storyline about queerness. Go to Full Review

For a show that made its success by being decidedly politically incorrect, [they've] found a voice in its 17th season that derides yet engages with the divisive politics of today. Go to Full Review

Season 17 may not be the best season of the long-running comedy as it will always have its formative years, filled with now potentially cancelable jokes and bits, to look back on, but as far as modern Sunny seasons go, this is one of the funniest. Go to Full Review

It’s Always Sunny takes a step back into the ring, legitimately posing a challenge to Hacks as the funniest show on television today. Go to Full Review

Tom F @RT55173143 Dec 31 Another solid if unremarkable season. See more Charlie P @RT00941520 Nov 1 The writers and cast seem to have lost their way in this season. The extreme behaviour of the group of sociopaths has always been funny because they have perceived it as normal, hence they never learn from their mistakes and default to failure. This makes their awfulness tolerable to watch. It depends on a comedic rhythm, where chaos is interspersed with relative calm and moments of reflection, even if that reflection is absurd and reveals their unhinged view of what is normal and acceptable. This season the plotting misses these comedic beats and seems to present us with pure chaos where the performances of the cast, particularly of Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and Dee (Kaitlin Olson) are too broad in comparison to previous seasons. Danny DeVito and Charlie Day remain consistently brilliant though. See more Michael M @SpideyJ Oct 4 They've still got it. Lol I laughed pretty hard at every episode. See more Erik B @Atma-X Sep 15 Still fun, still silly...but also quite outlandish this season. The storylines get bigger and wilder, but at the expense of the characters we've all grown to love (or hate). Still worth a watch...but feels like it's losing steam. See more Peter H @RT03678618 Sep 9 Wrong on so many levels but still hilarious!!!! I have no idea what goes on in there heads to think this stuff up but long may it continue!!! See more Tim I @RT59591359 Sep 7 I do find it hard to get past the fact that the cast don't look like their characters anymore because of all the plastic surgery (except Danny & Charlie). It's immersion breaking because poor dive bar owners don't look like they do now. There are some great ideas in this series with many episodes starting great, but not sticking the landing, I wanted to "get off", but rarely did that happen. Episode 2 was the best because it did stick the landing. Danny was fantastic in this series, Glenn was also very funny in his sinister way & I would have liked to see more of Charlie who didn't feel central to any episode. Overall, I would say it was a decent season, but didn't really pop. See more Read all reviews
