Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who's already slipped through the fingers of Detroit's finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell's attorney, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Timothy Olyphant's quickdraw charm shows no signs of dulling in City Primeval, an introspective and very welcome return for Raylan Givens.

It may not match Justified at its prime, but this fresh exploration of Marshal Givens works on a level that will serve to keep veteran viewers happy indeed. And yes, the mane is still intact. Go to Full Review

City Primeval is considerably more careful in its treatment of that violence, of that anger, embodied in the handsome frame of a middle-aged white man. It’s an admirable project for a reboot. Go to Full Review

What’s being examined in City Primeval isn’t the happy-go-lucky nature of our favorite trigger-happy marshal whose secret vice is an ice cream cone, it’s the primal nature of what makes him tick. Go to Full Review

So, while it's an okay police procedural with a fantastic antagonist (Holbrook truly is the highlight here), it's just a mediocre season of JUSTIFIED. Go to Full Review

James G. @trkythrston Oct 18 Boyd Holbrook saved it but otherwise a muddled drawn out plot that largely missed the mark of the original series. See more Chad P @RT34707554 Sep 8 I am having a tough time with this relaunch of the series. It just hasn't grabbed me like the original and I am going to say that is because we are NOT in KY and we do not have Boyd Crowder as the antagonist. Part of the magic of the original show was the conflict between Boyd and Raylan. Olyphant and Goggins were amazing playing off each other. I also thought the supporting cast around them was also much stronger. Not sure I will finish the season. See more charlie T @RT04455475 Aug 5 Show is OK. I think the true star here is Deacon Palmer. I'm really happy to see he left IPS and went on to be a detective. See more CloneByDesign T @RT70719926 Jun 8 Not even Raylan Givens can save City Primeval from lacklustre ensemble performances, weak writing, and an overall lack of chemistry between the iconic marshall and the rest of the characters. See more Russell A @Rallen117 May 20 The original series is one of my favorite shows ever. This is a perfect example of taking something great and then adding only things in that make it worse. It’s like they tried to make this one bad by not using anything that made the first so great. A love interest who lets be honest is not attractive and has zero chemistry. The daughter has no purpose other than to be really annoying and making you want to fast forward her scenes. They even watered down Raylin. No dynamic or exciting storylines like the original and you don’t get any of the Marshal being a badass really which is what made the original so good. Idk what the heck they were thinking here. See more Houston T @RT86764231 02/18/2025 Original justified was amazing! With this one, I don't think I've ever seen less chemistry between an actor and his supposed love interest. Also, While the whiny daughter was realistic. Wasn't fun to watch. See more Read all reviews
