Magic City: Season 1 (2012)

Critic Consensus: Ambitious and filled with vivid period details, Magic City is unfortunately plagued by a lagging pace and shortage of quality writing.

Magic City: Season 1 Photos

Tv Season Info

This evocative cable drama chronicles life in and around the Miramar Playa, a luxury hotel in Miami Beach circa 1959, where manager Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) contends with celebrity guests; politicians and bigwigs; shady characters; and a local mob boss who has designs on taking over the establishment. In the series opener, Ike's future hinges on the success of his hotel's New Year's Eve concert, and to ensure that things go well, he enlists the help of mobster Ben "The Butcher" Diamond (Danny Huston), whose price may prove to be dangerously high to Ike and his family. Meanwhile, Ike's two sons, Stevie (Steven Strait) and Danny (Christian Cooke), have chosen wildly divergent paths. Stevie is in danger of being seduced by the heady rush of the criminal life, while legal eagle Danny hitches his wagon to the State's Attorney's office. Season 1 examines how Ike tries to keep control of the Miramar any means necessary.

Critic Reviews for Magic City Season 1

All Critics (34) | Top Critics (23)

"Magic City" is a smart soap, with a gorgeously evoked time period that recalls "Mad Men" and a morally twisted mob theme that recalls "The Sopranos."

Oct 31, 2018 | Full Review…

Magic City strives for the clever period panache of Mad Men, but it's really just so much secondhand smoke.

Sep 16, 2013 | Full Review…

There is plenty of nudity as well as adult language and sex, but it all feels genuinely organic to the world of the show.

Sleepy, listless, dull. But it has a great set; the beach and clouds on the horizon are alluring.

The setting is so seductive, the period details so vivid and the acting so stellar, that it's as intoxicating as a potent mojito.

The sordid ugliness that festers inside Magic City's voluptuously beautiful wrappings makes irresistible television.

It makes Mad Men look like a dormitory suite. The story is promising... Check it out.

Nov 20, 2018 | Full Review…

While there are pretty things to look at it in this Magic City, the population just isn't interesting enough to warrant the trip.

Mar 30, 2012 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

While it may looks as pretty as Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire, it has a lot more in common with the short-lived Pan Am and Playboy Club.

Mar 30, 2012 | Full Review…

A big, sexy drama that doesn't take itself as seriously as The Sopranos or Mad Men and doesn't seem to expect us to, either.
