Maron: Season 1 (2013)

Critic Consensus: Podcaster extraordinaire Marc Maron plays a lightly fictionalized version of himself in this sharp, funny series, which is bolstered by a stable of noteworthy guest stars.

For now, Maron is a monologue when what's really valuable is the conversation.

The stories he tells in his monologues are here, effortlessly brought to life, and the writing doesn't corrupt Maron's sensibility.

Pure cynicism has proven to be a comic dead end. Maron, for all its edginess, is a show about something.

Take it from him, "If there's gonna be somebody crying and panting in my house, it's gonna be me." Meow to all that.

There is promise here. We'll keep it in the rotation for now.

Just as in life, some of the biggest laughs come from situations that are funny because they're absurd and awful. But they're not happening to you, so you can just enjoy watching.

The sophistication of the plotting and the completely natural flow and presence of all his supporting characters (including podcast guests like Denis Leary and The Kids in the Hall's Dave Foley) make for a very entertaining and often hilarious halfhour.

All being said, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed being around someone so self-involved this much.

The three episodes I've seen function as shaggy dog stories: not wildly funny, nor as dark and emotional as Louie so often gets, but amusing in spots and with a very clear voice.

Maron's musings will be enough for some, but on the evidence of this uninspiring first episode, I'm inclined to agree with Dragonmaster's mean-spirited assessment: "If whining was jokes, Marc Maron would be a genius."
