Audience Reviews for Red Dwarf: Season 6

In my review for Season 4, I referred to it as starting off in the Very Good territory and ending in the Fairly Good range; well Season 6 is largely the same, except it starts off in Outstanding territory and ends in Pretty Solid territory, making this my favorite Season of the show outside of S3 & S5. Like Season 5, the show maintains some very strong concepts, and the fact that they were able to make a Western-themed episode completely organically is nothing short of a miracle, considering how much contrived back-breaking other shows like Star Trek need to perform to arrange it. And when I say that it starts off strong, I don't mean that it starts off above-average; the first three episodes, 'Psirens', 'Legion' and 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' are genuinely three of the top 10 episodes of the entire franchise's run (or at least top 20). 'Psirens' flawlessly combines horror, mystery and comedy, 'Legion' is very funny as it creates an upbeat mystery that is rare in the sci-fi genre, and 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse', taking place in an interactive dream, is considered by many to be Red Dwarf at its absolute funniest, and in many ways I'll absolutely agree; this is up there with 'Polymorph' and 'Quarantine'. Things do then stagger with the slightly underwhelming but still rather good 'Polymorph 2: Emohawk', which has the unfortunate distinction of being a spiritual successor to arguably the best episode in the entire franchise, and simply isn't as good. Next up is 'Rimmerworld', which is essentially Season 1's "Me ^2" (Me-squarred) but brought up to the hundreds, and funnier; honestly, however, it's not a classic, but as far as throwaway episodes go, it's certainly good overall with some moments of tension in the earlier bits before it goes into absurdity. Ending the Season is 'Out of Time', an episode that starts off quite funny (with an entire first act that is unnecessary but had me laughing throughout), but then ends on a surprisingly explosive, edge-of-your-seat climax. More importantly, however, is that the second-to-third act transition, where the heroes' future selves board the ship, actually gets quite poignant, and this scene ends with an absolutely wonderful moment where Lister plays a genuine hero -- then, in the final seconds of the episode, Rimmer legitimately takes up the hero role in a powerful final moment (that was sadly more or less cancelled by Season 7.....). While I don't consider 'Out of Time' to be on par with the first three of the Season, mostly because the latter half simply isn't nearly as funny as the rest of the Season, I would still consider it easily the best of the latter half, as it's actually quite emotionally moving toward the end. Overall, Season 6 does the show proud, and is easily some of the finest moments of the entire series, both comedically and dramatically.

Unique idea, brilliantly performed, with (imho) Chris Barry an absolutely MontyPythonesque hilarious actor (also see: The Brittas Empire)! But The other three actors certainly worthty adversaries.

The last great season of Red dwarf. Season 7 onwards were solely wrote by Doug Naylor and to be honest the series was never the same. Series 7 to 9 came out 1997-1999 and part from the very odd episode was quite disappointing. So no more classic Red Dwarf .. :{ .. wait .. it came back in 2009 as a 3 part special... it wasn’t good though... Then it came back again for 3 more seasons 2012-2017 and is actually really funny with some classic episodes and moments !

A return to form for the show and the end of the classic era! it even had a cliffhanger! This season was a real comeback for the show. After the failure and disappoinments with experimenting in America the writers struck gold with this season. The budget has been increased and we get 6 very funny and very ambitious episodes that bring the feeling of earlier seasons. After losing Red Dwarf the crew minus Holly are stuck on Starbug together. This season feels more like a quirky sitcom and all four members have equal roles and this is the best they have all been together. Sadly Rob Grant one of the original writers would not return after this season.

A slight step back from the previous few seasons. Still typically funny, zany and filled with sci-fi mayhem.
