Red Oaks: Season 2 (2016)

SEASON:

Season 2
Red Oaks

Critics Consensus

Red Oaks doesn't sprout in ambition during its sophomore season, but the series is tough to beat as a rose-tinted glance at the past, with a troupe of superb actors bringing an earthy charm to the 1980s chic.

Red Oaks doesn't break ground, but it's so sweet and well-made that it feels nice to settle into something so familiar.

Aside from the sheer enjoyment that comes from watching the delightful and whip-smart comedy, there's a case to be made for "Red Oaks" as the most significant nostalgia-infused TV series currently streaming.

It's scene-stealing tennis pro Nash (Ennis Esmer) who provides the big laughs in this totally bingeworthy and funny coming-of-age comedy.

What is most appealing about Red Oaks is that it doesn't capitalize on the trends in the 80s, but subtly showcases it in the everyday lives of its characters.

I enjoy barreling through it each season, even as I find myself wishing it was much funnier and/or went deeper into either the characters or the stakes of their lives.

The good news is that Season Two is even better than Season One. Reiser and Kind - who once acted together on Mad About You - have great storylines in the new season.

The pacing is sometimes tediously slow, but for the most part, Oaks is cozily welcoming.

Red Oaks: Season 2 came along at exactly the right time to remind us that, no matter how freaky the future looks, everything's gonna be alright.

When they used songs by bigger names, like Roxy Music or New Order in the second season, the moments felt earned and avoided clichés.

Like the last season, what elevates Red Oaks beyond a simple nostalgia trip is the behind-the-camera talent.

Audience Reviews for Red Oaks: Season 2

Love this show. It truly understands how to build characters you care about.

Richard Kind is fantastic and steals the show. I wish the would have been more golf/tennis club scenes but Season 2 makes up for it in themes of loyalty and family first. The divorce the Meyers are going through, and the Getty trial and what their family is going through...there are many redeeming quality to be had here, both with the characters and the story. Funny and nostalgic show with some good drama mixed in, I would recommend.

I was really impressed by this season of Red Oaks. The show really evolved in its second season with a revival and complication of plots and characters growing up. What seems like maybe a simpleton 80s remake rom-com series has grown into something greater and more lasting.
