Vietnam veterans-turned-California beach bums Cody and Nick open a detective agency that operates mainly from Cody's boat, the Riptide. They are assisted by another old friend, dweebish electronics genius "Boz" Bozinsky. Their investigations also occasionally involve Nick's aging but reliable helicopter, the Screaming Mimi.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Cobbled together from the spare parts of just about every other action series preceding it, Riptide isn't fun enough to make up for its complete lack of originality.

The script is big on unlikelihoods and massive on gags and pace. Anything thoughtful has no place here. It's that kind of show. Go to Full Review

"Brains are sexy," one hunk consoles his fellow. "In a few years, a good-looking moron like you won't stand a chance." I wish the same could be said of [this] good-looking moronic television series. Go to Full Review

It was full of excruciating lines, excruciatingly delivered, continuity clangers and improbable plot devices. Go to Full Review

I don't know whether Riptide is a send-up or a satire, but it moved like greased lightning. This is the buddy drama to end all buddy dramas, being NBC's answer to Simon & Simon, The A-Team and La Cage Aux Folks. Go to Full Review

Although mildly diverting, it isn't worth yawning all day Monday to stay up to watch. Go to Full Review
