Critics Consensus

Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

While there are some high points in the episodes, Starfleet Academy doesn’t get passing marks on its report card. Go to Full Review

Aimed at YAs, it's far too melodramatic with sci-fi jargon-filled dialogue that's shallow, superficial & often mumbled. As Chancellor. Holly Hunter is sloppy & unkempt, flopping in the captain's chair like a barefoot hippie in a dorm room. Go to Full Review

Starfleet Academy really isn’t a gamble, it is just drivel, poorly conceived in an effort to meet an audience Star Trek doesn’t have where it thinks they are. Go to Full Review

Professor G @atreiromg 5d Desperdício de tempo e energia elétrica! See more Rawiwan T @Pawnshopmovie Jul 16 It's great to see the creators aiming for a whole new audience and getting rid of the "old crew". A very brave and "out of the box" move. However, for me, it got too painful to watch but I did try . I gave it 2 stars as the first few episodes did have some entertainment and the acting from the older members of cast was good and even some of the younger members did well with what they had to work with. This is a personal view but after watching this I feel the entertainment value has left this once great iconic series for good. A real shame in this age of technology that has the ability to turn this legendary story into a huge favourite. I understand that things are a cost basis for producers but I think that with the money spent on this the result could have been so much better. See more Heath A @RT32039065 Jul 13 What an amazing show! Holly Hunter portrays the captain as someone who feels like a real person instead of the typical, larger-than-life commanding officer. Seeing her walk around barefoot, stretch out across the captain's chair, and read an actual book gives the character a relaxed, authentic personality that makes her very relatable. At the beginning, I was worried that the character Sam was going to be a bit too much, but as ti progressed they toned her down, and I felt like she fit really well. I'm giving the show 4 stars because one aspect felt a little forced to me. It seemed unusual that the two main Klingon characters were both portrayed as gay. I understand and respect that shows want to include LGBTQ+ representation, but for me it felt like this particular choice was emphasized more than necessary rather than developing naturally within the story. Overall, though, the writing, characters, and performances were excellent, and I'm excited to see what Season 2 has in store. See more Alexandre A @L0v3TV Jul 10 This is a great show. Completely in the spirit of Star Trek. Holly Hunter, whom I love, was a bit annoying at the beginning of the show as the hippie San Francisco teacher, but she got her footing mid season and was great after. Paul Giamatti was phenomenal. Tig Nogarro is my favorite new character since her appearance on Discovery. The young cast was a great crop of young talents. It’s a bit of a 2000 Teen Disney show at times, but it’s great for what it is. We have a bunch of boomers and Genxers (which is my generation) that are disappointed to not feel what they felt when they first discovered ST, to those people I just want to say: Grow up. You are not going to get that thrill you felt 30 0r 60 years ago. To anybody that says that ST is now woke: It always was, either you don’t know anything about ST, or you’re the one whose changes. For anyone saying that ST used to be more subtle: it’s absolutely not true. We have some great ST show on, and we should be greatful for that. I have always wanted teen or young adult scifi that was the main and not a random side story. See more Read all reviews
