What to Know

Critics Consensus

Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

Aimed at YAs, it's far too melodramatic with sci-fi jargon-filled dialogue that's shallow, superficial & often mumbled. As Chancellor. Holly Hunter is sloppy & unkempt, flopping in the captain's chair like a barefoot hippie in a dorm room. Go to Full Review

Starfleet Academy really isn’t a gamble, it is just drivel, poorly conceived in an effort to meet an audience Star Trek doesn’t have where it thinks they are. Go to Full Review

If the franchise continues to respect the past while remaining aspirational about the future, there’s room for stories like Starfleet Academy to push the universe forward. Go to Full Review

Daniel M @RT21146315 5d The show was badly written. A few potentially good characters (Sam and Jay-Den for example). But too much time is wasted on the "bad boy" and the terrible romance arc with the betazoid overpowered princess. See more Angela Z @RT67040279 Jun 2 I absolutely loved this first season. I love all things Star Trek. I loved seeing these cadets grow and learn. I saw a bit of myself in them. I can't wait to see many more seasons! See more Willi M. @McWilly May 26 Great show. Paramount needs to rethink their decision See more Cindy J @AppleL May 18 This first season is a wonderful addition to the Star Trek franchise. The storylines are suitable to a school setting and the acting is superb. I enjoyed every episode. I am 67 and still love the possitive messages of Star Trek. I can't wait for season two. See more Tom F @RT55173143 May 17 Mediocre new Trek is better than no new Trek at all. The cast is good and they play with a lot of interesting ideas, but the execution rarely nails it. I wish they stuck with smaller ideas with fewer high stakes adventures. See more Michael J @MJinVA May 14 I have watched most of the Star Trek series and all of the movies. I couldn't get past three episodes of this before I stopped. The writing is weak and the characters are not compelling. Holly Hunter is particularly bad. She is preachy, dull, and doesn't have any of the gravitas of the previous lead actors. Maybe Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer ruined it for me because she played a similar character but much better. Caleb Mir was an unlikeable character that I think you were supposed to love. The Betazoid girl became enamored with Caleb almost from the first meeting for some unknown reason. The story lines around the young people are like The CW meets 90210. And the resolution of the Betazoid dilemma was telegraphed from the moment they arrived. Not sure why the critics loved it.
