[Kyra] Sedgwick is tremendous, but the series' cast, including J.K. Simmons, Corey Reynolds and Robert Gossett, grew to the challenge the first season. Natasha C @NatashaChase Jan 10 The Closer centers on Brenda as the main character, but she’s deeply flawed. She’s consistently cruel to her FBI boyfriend, using him without hesitation and stringing him along with empty promises. Her behavior often feels like a deliberate bait-and-switch, bordering on outright emotional fraud. It’s hard to understand why he keeps forgiving her, or why he stays with her at all, aside from a mix of codependency and trauma bonding. Ultimately, this dynamic doesn’t feel compelling so much as dispiriting. It just leaves viewers feeling sad and sympathetic towards the bf rather than invested in the couple’s happiness.
