Critics Consensus

Chris Rock brings a welcome dose of irreverence to the 77th Oscars, but his polarizing barbs still can't fully elevate a ceremony that struggles to balance showtime efficiency and giving honorees their proper due.

Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 77th Oscars

All Critics (24) | Top Critics (17)

Rock was quick on the attack, fast-thinking, and his energy level seemed to urge the Oscarcast along. Within the first minute, it was clear he'd been a good choice for emcee.

About 80 percent of Rock's material was great, and, unlike Sean Penn, I didn't mind that he stuck it to Jude Law and Colin Farrell, both of whom were way, way overexposed last year.

Chris Rock was hilarious, even if he is getting roasted in New York... it took a little of the starch out of the whole stiff-haired affair.

[Chris Rock] crammed more energy and politics into one monologue than all of the previous monologues of the century combined... Rock brought a messy, fraught country at war into the proceedings.

No matter how gimmicky the presentation, no matter how novel the host, it's still a long, self-indulgent evening. And, no matter how stagey or self-conscious, it's one many of us wouldn't miss.

[Chris Rock] was appealingly chipper, but not exciting or unpredictable. Ultimately, he didn't give the Oscar telecast what it so desperately needs in this era of awards-show overpopulation: A pulse.

Another reason the show was so lackluster was that the comedian Chris Rock, master of ceremonies for the evening, failed to impose his own personality on the proceedings.

It still took [more] than three hours to hand out two dozen awards... It didn't help that first-time host Chris Rock rambled on for nearly 15 painfully unfunny minutes in his opening monologue.

It's imperative that interested parties get real here. The Oscars have turned into godawful TV.

The audience was behind Rock from the start, and he was good enough to keep them in his corner.

Nov 1, 2019 | Full Review…

With first-time host Chris Rock keeping things lively with pointed humor that stopped just short of being too risqué for the network airwaves, last night's Oscar ceremony lived up to expectations.
