By the age of 19, Oscar De La Hoya was an Olympic boxing gold medalist, a multi-world title-winning professional boxer, a hometown hero and a role model to his Mexican American community in East Los Angeles. Nicknamed "The Golden Boy," De La Hoya, with his good looks, electric charisma, and heartfelt story of winning Olympic gold for his dying mother, rocketed to national prominence as a superstar both in and outside the ring. However, all was not what it appeared to be behind that polished facade.

There’s not a lot of nuts-and-bolts boxing strategy discussed here, but there is much about how difficult it can be to manage huge sums of money, a complicated family life, and the hopes and dreams of millions of Mexican Americans, all at once Go to Full Review

A two-part HBO documentary that’s far more revealing, critical, and ambivalent than most like-minded authorized affairs. Go to Full Review

What gives this doc its punch is De La Hoya’s eagerness to explore his torments as well as his triumphs. And there are many of the former - almost too many. Go to Full Review

Michael W @mawilps 08/05/2023 This sports docuseries was very good. Oscar De La Hoya and the entire crew did a spectacular job on telling Oscar's story. It was very inspiring, dramatic, and shocking. It really goes into every specific detail of his life and what he went through during his life and career. If you're an HBO Max member, you should watch this series sometime. It's a definite must see. See more Ron G @RT90280672 07/31/2023 Boy oh boy this is a terrifically entertaining documentary of the great prize fighter and champion Oscar De La Hoya. Episode one is the beauty of the rise, the American dream come true, episode two is the down side of fame. I've gotta say, the fact of the macho man in the wigs and fishnets, so shocking thirty years ago now seem just a fun foreplay for the beautiful macho man and his gorgeous mistress. What is shocking is his infidelities and disregard for his wives and children. If he weren't such a beauty would he have been so forgiven? See more Read all reviews
