As a child, Uhtred witnessed his father being killed and the Saxon army defeated by invading troops. Danish warlord Earl Ragnar captured Uhtred and raised him in a Danish camp alongside fellow captive Brida, a sharp-tongued girl. Years later, Uhtred is a valiant warrior who is dealt another tragic blow when his home is deliberately set on fire, killing his surrogate family, including Ragnar. Now exiled -- alone except for Brida by his side -- he vows to avenge Ragnar's death and reclaim his homeland. But, he must choose between his birth country and the people who raised him. If he is going to help birth a new nation and ultimately recapture his ancestral land he must walk dangerous path between both sides.

Intelligent in both pacing and structure but with just enough sly wit and bloody carnage... Go to Full Review

Political intrigue and historical authenticity, not to mention decent acting, gave way to romantic slush, [and] unconvincing dialogue which could never make up its mind whether it wanted to be cod-Shakespearean or yoof-friendly. Go to Full Review

It’s the dramatic oppositions which fuel The Last Kingdom's formidable grip – risk versus reward, or the heady allure of power balanced against what has to be sacrificed to attain it. Go to Full Review

Aprilx21st T @Aprilx21st May 29 I'd rewatch this show from S1 to S5 again and again . Love it. See more Jaime B. @JaimeB76 Jan 11 Season 5 delivers more perfection! My only complaint is there isn’t a season 6 See more M V @Mervn Oct 24 Enjoyable series overall. Started strong but I found season 5 awfully painful to watch at times and I actually fast forwarded through several parts. It let the whole series down. It felt lazy - bloated battle scenes, inconsistent character arcs, broken logic and contrived drama. The casting for Lady Aelswith was terrible. She barely aged over the seasons (I would say even started looking younger at times) and was freakishly younger looking than her children so was very hard to take seriously. See more Sue B @RT57575603 Jul 23 This is not the Utred of S1-4 😡😡 **** SPOILERS AHEAD **** Old Utred would’ve wised up to Brida’s attack in Efwich when his son showed up a eunuch. Old Utred would’ve refused to kill Sitrygger and would’ve gladly become Edward’s enemy rather than kill his own son in law. Old Utred wouldn’t have lost Aethelstan so often. Old Utred would certainly not have asked his daughter to swear fealty to Edward! I hate this Utred! Apart from this new Utred, the show writes antagonists so well. All the baddies are so bad. I love to hate them! See more Allen J @RT85680168 Jun 16 The series let me down. Utred resigns as lord of Mercia?? Really. What a ridiculous plot. If you are looking for a historical account of the creation of an English kingdom, look elsewhere. See more S D @staceleann36 04/29/2025 I absolutely loved the first 4 seasons, but the last season missed the mark. The writing made no sense. Everything felt rushed to get to an ending. Even characters did things they would NEVER do. Never in a million years would Aelswith give Aelswyn, a royal child, the granddaughter of Alfred the great, to a poor nobody viking kid. That wasn't just ridiculous writing it was stupid writing. Aelswith is all about doing everything correctly, protecting the royal name and heritage, and after spending 4 years of making her someone who hates the heathen, she would never give her precious granddaughter to one so nonchalantly as if it didnt matter. They turn Edward into a raging maniac who has no control over himself, which is completely off character. It's too bad the writers moved so far away from the novels. I think there would have been more cohesiveness and solid underfooting if they hadn't done that. It was obvious that the writers lost all sense of plot and were just kind of winging it and wandering aimlessly in the last season. See more Read all reviews
