Critic Reviews for The Outer Limits (1963) Season 1

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (5)

The result is a B-movie-inspired anthology series that looks like a European art film -- one that's aged surprisingly well.

Twilight Zone never looked better.

The Outer Limits boasted scary, gruesome alien creatures, innovative scripts by such noted sci-fi writers as Harlan Ellison, and such guest stars as Gloria Grahame, Miriam Hopkins, Martin Landau, Sally Kellerman, David McCallum and Lloyd Nolan.

Don't pass up a chance to see "Demon With a Glass Hand," the best episode of the black-and-white series, which ran for two seasons starting in 1963 and boasted top writers, directors and actors of the time.

Nearly all of the best episodes were from the show's far superior first season.

Apr 25, 2018 | Full Review…

Three of the season's best episodes -- "O.B.I.T.," "Nightmare," and "The Guests" -- are merciless classics of the sci-fi and horror genres, metaphorically examining our surveillance and torture states in their infancy.

After Rod Serling's original The Twilight Zone became a hit on CBS, it didn't take long for other TV sci-fi anthology shows to pop up on television. The Outer Limits was one of the best.

Apr 26, 2018 | Full Review…

While Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone is generally considered the more intellectual of the two, The Outer Limits boasted something more blunt and effective: monsters.

The Outer Limits set the bar in many ways, and set it high.

Apr 25, 2018 | Full Review…

Not all of the Limits episodes have aged well; the best -- and [The Zanti Misfits] is among them -- are those that mix a little moralizing into their sci-fi. Good stuff.

Apr 26, 2018 | Full Review…

Screenwriting is a strong point of the series, and many of the episodes display a philosophical streak that more than makes up for what they lack in terms of convincing special effects.

Audience Reviews for The Outer Limits (1963): Season 1

  • Jan 28, 2019
I have watched all of the original two seasons many times over. And all of the new version once. I am still amazed at the quality of the writing and the production values that went into Season 1. 32 episodes !!! Unheard of these days. And compare the best episodes to the B&W science fiction movies of the time. The comparison is even more glaring. The Canadian version also had some accomplished episodes. But much more hit and miss. And not nearly as groundbreaking. Some garbage episodes like Borderland. But then brilliant ones like OBIT or Chameleon. Season 2 (half a season really) frequently ruined by bad scripts and cut budgets. And the music of Harry Lubin versus Dominic Frontier ??? A huge mistake. Concentrate instead on Season 1. It's worth mentioning that Don't Open Until Doomsday is weird beyond belief - but in a good way.
