Insanely good how it shows Yoshiki's back-and-forth between his selfishness to keep 'Hikaru' and his guilt over not being able to let go of Hikaru's body. The depiction of alienation and internalized homophobia hit hard. It's so hard to find a film that depicts alienation, depression, self-hate, etc so well, but this series addressed these topics in such a serious, thought-out manner. It addressed the pressures of growing up in a judgmental, traditional community when you don't fit the mold. It addresses how environments like the one Yoshiki grows up in can create immense self-loathing and hatred that lead you to view yourself as monstrous and inhuman. Most of all, this show depicts the struggles of being a queer teen in a society that ostracizes and demonizes queerness - the struggles and mental anguish this alienation produces. This show is beautiful, and I can't wait for the second season. It ends seemingly 'halfway' at a very strange point, with none of the key questions resolved (who is the man in the sunglasses, what is hikaru, what will happen to the village now, what is the point of all this 'village history' that ultimately goes nowhere). Also it just seems like a total waste of everyones energy when you get to the end, it is "ah, joke is on you guys". You are asking yourself what on earth was the point of watching the entire season, and the ending makes you feel like you are simply back at square one since the beginning with the mystery/ plot not having progressed at all past what we already knew in episode one. Parts of the story remind me of King’s It and Pet Cematary, while combining with elements of Shinto and boy’s love in this really unique way that I have not seen before in an anime. I look forward to seeing where this story goes! It’s definitely one of the most original anime I’ve seen since Attack on Titan. See more Purry A @RT73926649 Mar 30 A few years ago, I initially read the manga of the series first. I was HOOKED. I just love how this series combines both mystery and horror with slow-burn romance. This series (AND manga) is a must see if you're tired of care-free happy anime or just want to see some monster and human relationship development (which is pretty interesting!)
