What to Know

Critics Consensus

As made evident in Interview with the Vampire, Sam Reid perfectly embodies this luridly divine undead Frenchman, but The Vampire Lestat makes him a snarling, campy, and utterly magnetic star who unapologetically commands your attention.

A rich continuation of the Anne Rice universe, The Vampire Lestat emerges as a spellbinding entry pulsating with exquisite chaos and gothic despair.

Reid, who is best known to Australian audiences from the ABC’s terrific drama The Newsreader, is magnetic as Lestat, all crazy eyes and body glitter, with the camp dial turned all the way up. Go to Full Review

More theatrical and bombastic than the show has ever been, The Vampire Lestat embraces cigarettes and rock ’n’ roll — yet, for all its spectacle, this third outing remains as moving as ever. Go to Full Review

It’s an immersive experience of excess, a feast for and an attack on the senses. Go to Full Review

Still quite beautiful and sporadically shocking, it’s notably less enticing than it was, even if it doesn’t suck. Go to Full Review

The actors make this show about the undead so real and relevant for the living. We’re seeing this longing for companionship in a world that’s becoming increasingly isolated. We’re seeing the impact of idolatry in a world where heroes are dwindling. Go to Full Review

What makes The Vampire Lestat truly sing is Reid’s remarkable central turn. We understand that Lestat is a little lost boy ... One thoroughly complicit in his own undoing, spiralling while singing to fulfil his desperately longing need. Go to Full Review

Stephanie M @stemore 1 day ago Sam Reid is freakishly talented. To be able to sing like THAT on top of being an astonishingly great actor.... craziness. He and Jacob Anderson should have been showered in awards through these three seasons. I watched The Vampire Lestat and East of Eden recently, and both are very bold, intelligent, arresting, and affecting adaptations of their source material. See more Luella L @Luellalll 1 day ago Vampire Lestat is a good show, but could have been much better. I feel like the editing is a bit too contrived, and I hate the singing of Sam Reid in every single episode. See more Lexy T @RT96203580 2 days ago Good news! If you loved IWTV but hated the romance, great writing, Louis, Armand, Daniel, book accurate Lestat, or nuanced takes on race, abuse, and sexuality, then you’ll love The Vampire Lestat! See more Brooke S @BrookS33 Oct 14, 2026 This season was so incredible, I had to make an RT account to post a review. Apart from the continued brilliance of the performances from Sam Reid (this is one of the best performances I've ever seen, no exaggeration) and Jacob Anderson, and others, you don't see a lot of TV these days that takes risks like this or that dares to exist in ambiguity. The layers of this show are profound, and the writing is just superb, and the characters are fascinating. I can't wait for season 4. I am curious what they'll do because while this season is called The Vampire Lestat, they haven't yet told the full Vampire Lestat story, so it seems more like they're mixing together elements of different books -- so we'll get more of that story plus Queen of the Damned next season, which I wish would start tomorrow! See more Callum T @RT93654804 Oct 14, 2026 Abject Butchery. That is the phrase which best sums up AMC's The Vampire Lestat. A narcissistic, disrespectful mutilation of the source material, a grotesque Frankenstein's monster of a story shamelessly parading itself about as an "adaptation" of Anne Rice's gothic horror masterpiece. The first two seasons, the show known as "Interview with the Vampire," succeeded in not only adapting the classic vampire novel that shares its name, but elevating it, making changes that added even more layers to its characters and wrinkles to its plot lines, creating a version of the story that resonates even more greatly with modern audiences without disrespecting Rice's original vision. "The Vampire Lestat" does none of these things. Every character is mischaracterized, every plot line is misconstrued, and every relationship is misrepresented at every single turn. As potent as Sam Reid continues to be as the titular vampire, I fear our beloved Lestat may never get the spotlight he deserves. See more Ann L @Ann0000 Oct 8, 2026 The first two seasons were some of the best television I’ve watched in a decade. Season 3, however, is an absolute mess. The core issue is a complete lack of heart. The writers seem to have lost all affection for these characters, failing to provide them with compelling or original arcs. This is especially evident with Louis. The show uses the vampire genre as a shield to deliver a toxic message of victim-blaming. Humanity is granted to vampires only when it serves to make specific characters sympathetic, yet it is conveniently stripped away from Louis—the character who has endured the most violence across three seasons.
Victims are expected to be flawless; otherwise, their suffering is dismissed as "mutual abuse," and they are forced to apologize simply for fighting back. No matter how much the series hides behind its genre tropes, once it starts pushing a message this flawed, it has fundamentally failed. The only saving grace is that the cast remains phenomenal.
