Season 1
Undercovers

Critics Consensus

Visually sharp but narratively undercooked, Undercovers is occasionally fun but lacks the dramatic tension needed to pull off its blend of action and comedy.

Tv Season Info

Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw star as a bored married couple who get their groove back by reentering the world of espionage, which the former CIA agents thought they had left behind after retiring five years earlier to open a catering company. Cocreator J.J. Abrams directed the pilot, in which the pair accept a mission to track down their missing friend and fellow agent, played by Carter MacIntyre. Gerald McRaney, Ben Schwartz and Mekia Cox round out the cast.

"Undercovers" is so content to lapse into genre conventions, that it feels complacent and banal.

It feels more like a trip to nowhere.

With dazzling action scenes and a pair of stars who ooze charm and sensuality, Undercovers easily overcomes its predictability.

Spy dramas sometimes get too enamored of their own twists, subplots and dark details, but this one never becomes impenetrable.

It is all a little too casual and humorous to be convincing.

The series also feels redundant and only on NBC's schedule because of its pedigree -- JJ Abrams ("Lost," "Star Trek").

Sep 30, 2010 | Full Review…

At times witty and always good-looking, Undercovers needs to figure out how to balance its serious, silly, and gimmicky inclinations.

Fun to watch but rather forgettable, because the stakes just don't feel all that high.

Sep 30, 2010 | Full Review…

Abrams and company, including Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw, who possess chemistry but lack sufficient charm and delivery, must find some way to jump-start this misfire before it fades into obscurity.

"Undercovers" in some respects mirrors the initial problem with the central duo's relationship -- comfortable, perhaps, but failing to spark the kind of passion necessary to elicit fidelity from viewers.
