Oscar and Emmy winner Kevin Costner is the marquee attraction of the ensemble cast in this drama series, starring as the patriarch of a powerful, complicated family of ranchers. A sixth-generation homesteader and devoted father, John Dutton controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. He operates in a corrupt world where politicians are compromised by influential oil and lumber corporations and land grabs make developers billions. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect, Dutton's property is in constant conflict with those it borders -- an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America's first national park.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Hitting its stride as a predictably unpredictable oat opera, Yellowstone continues to entertain with its tough-as-rawhide characters and modernized perspective on classic cowboy tropes.

The bunkhouse is also the primary site of one of Yellowstone’s most compelling character developments...by Season 4, Jimmy is transformed into a proper cowboy. The bunkhouse values are competence and independence above all else. Go to Full Review

It's the oldest story told about the American west, but creator Taylor Sheridan capably reimagines the enemy for late-stage capitalism: land developers, private equity, eminent domain. It's not just John's ranch at stake, but his way of life. Go to Full Review

Yellowstone, however, instead focused less on vengeance than on teasing tragedies and revelations at the same time that its characters circled the wagons and licked their wounds... Go to Full Review

[Cowboy] roles are colourfully portrayed in Yellowstone - now four seasons in - while also embracing western tropes about preserving ranch culture, protecting the land from greedy developers, and settling tensions with Native American tribes. Go to Full Review

In a sense, it another one of those rich family-power struggle dramas, like Succession. But the Western setting changes everything. Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 5d Yellowstone is one of those rare series that feels bigger than its plot. It is a family tragedy, a modern western, and a brutal elegy for a world built on land, blood, power, and loyalty. Kevin Costner is phenomenal as John Dutton, giving the show its hard, wounded center, but the whole cast is strong. For me, though, Kelsey Asbille is the standout. Every scene she is in feels sharper and more alive. What makes the series hit so hard is not only the drama, but the way it turns landscape, music, silence, and violence into something almost mythic. Yes, it can be excessive, repetitive, and proudly melodramatic, but that is part of its identity. It has soul, presence, and a real emotional weight that stays with you. See more Steve Y @SteveYost2323 Dec 30 The first two seasons were very good, the 3rd was ok, and the 4th just became bananas stupid. I could not even get through the first couple episodes, the whole dynamic between Beth and Jamie was nauseating beyond belief. Two of the worst characters ever written, both so over the top and ridiculous that no people like either of them have ever existed in any universe or dimension. Season 3 ends with everybody in the Dutton family getting shot or blown up, and season 4 starts will all surviving miraculously. The only reason I started watching season 4 was to see if Beth finally got killed, which would have been the only way to make the show watchable. Jamie is the most cringe male character ever. Just yuck, weak, stupid writing and garbage characters. See more Tom F @RT55173143 Aug 4 Succession featured a family of terrible people who thought they were the best people on earth, deserving their wealth and power. The difference with Yellowstone isn’t the horses and big skies, it’s that the show wants to convince you that the terrible people doing terrible things really are as awesome as they think. See more Frans B @FransB Jun 23 S 4 kicks off straight into HIGH gear! Phew ... Still delivering the goods, still riveting, fast paced, lots of twists, action galore, bullets flying, horses galloping and spit & grit. Get them doggies up! This season will thrill like never before, it seems. Let's see if the Dutton's survive this See more Nay N @Sliceoflife 03/09/2025 Absolutely a waste of time to watch. They should rename the show to Beth is a whiny baby. See more Tony S @RT82338677 02/06/2025 I really enjoy the show, but it’s getting a tad predictable with the Duttons always being under some kind of threat. Then add in the pointless horse dancing breaks and it’s fast becoming unwatchable (season 4). See more Read all reviews
