Independent, New York-based filmmaker Chenzira has a background in dance, theater, music, and still photography, all of which she uses when making her movies and videos. One of her best-known films, an animated short, Hairpiece: A Film for Nappy-Headed People (1984), is considered an important entry in Black Cinema. Most of her work centers on dance and the experiences of African-Americans. She also works with feminist topics such as sexual abuse. Much of her film work centers around the misuse of power to reinforce racism and sexism. In addition to filmmaking, Chenzira also works as a media activist, teacher, and lecturer focusing on the relationship between African-Americans and the media.
